What Takes Place When A Pomeranian Is Shaved

Expert’s answer:

When a Pomeranian is shaved, there can be several outcomes depending on the individual dog and how the shaving is done. Here are some possible effects that can occur when a Pomeranian is shaved:

Alteration of Coat Growth:

Shaving a Pomeranian’s coat can lead to a change in how the fur grows back. In some cases, the coat may grow back relatively quickly and return to its original appearance. However, there is also a possibility that the fur may never grow back the same way it was before. It could take a long time for the fur to fully regrow, or it may not regrow at all. This is particularly true if the Pomeranian’s hair was badly matted before shaving.

Post-Clipping Alopecia:

One potential issue that can occur after shaving a Pomeranian is a condition called post-clipping alopecia. This refers to a situation where the dog’s coat does not fully regrow or regrows in an abnormal manner after being shaved. Post-clipping alopecia can result in patchy or thin hair growth. It is important to note that not all Pomeranians will experience this condition, but it is a risk associated with shaving.

Impact on Skin:

Shaving a Pomeranian can also have an impact on the dog’s skin. When the coat is shaved, the skin is exposed to the elements and may be more vulnerable to sunburn, insect bites, and other irritations. It is important to protect a shaved Pomeranian from extreme temperatures and provide appropriate sun protection if necessary.

Groomer Instructions:

If you decide to take your Pomeranian to a groomer, it is crucial to give clear instructions on what you want done and what you don’t want done. Miscommunication or misunderstandings can lead to undesired outcomes. It is essential to find a reputable groomer who has experience working with Pomeranians and understands their specific grooming needs.

Exceptions:

While it is generally not recommended to shave a Pomeranian for aesthetic purposes, there may be exceptions where shaving is necessary for the dog’s health or well-being. For example, if a Pomeranian’s coat is severely matted and causing discomfort or skin issues, shaving may be required to alleviate the problem. In such cases, it is important to consult with a veterinarian or a professional groomer to ensure the shaving is done properly and with the dog’s best interest in mind.

Overall, it is important to consider the potential risks and consequences before deciding to shave a Pomeranian. It is recommended to consult with a veterinarian or a professional groomer who can provide guidance based on the specific needs of your Pomeranian.

What happens if you shorten a Pomeranian’s hair?

Therefore, it’s crucial to refrain from shaving your Pomeranian during the summer. According to Corless, they require the majority of their fur to maintain a constant body temperature.

Its insulation layer is compromised if it is cut too short, the expert warns, and the dog may end up overheating. They are also vulnerable to a condition known as shave alopecia. This is when shaving the hair closely leads to permanent hair loss”.

Maintaining your Pomeranian’s skin and coat first will make sure your fluffy friend can safely sport any style of haircut. If you choose a shorter hairstyle for your Pom, make sure to protect the skin from the sun and keep the coat moisturized to prevent sun damage.

You can decide to leave your dog’s hair longer for the winter and experiment more with their haircuts, Corless explains. “The same moisturizing is beneficial in dry air; however, be cautious of wet weather matting up their coat. If not, be sure to thoroughly brush your dog”.

Does a Pomeranian’s coat become damaged after shaving?

Pommeranians have short, supple coats as puppies. As they mature, they go through a stage known as the puppy uglies in which the adult coat grows in. A Pom’s coat may appear patchy and sparse during that time. A Pomeranian’s adult coat is luxuriously thick and relatively long by the time they reach adulthood.

The coat can be trimmed to make it appear neat and put together. You shouldn’t shave it.

But occasionally, much to the owner’s surprise, a Pomeranian will be brought in for a trim and the groomer will shave the coat down. In other instances, a Pomeranian owner may request a shave without fully understanding the long-term effects.
