How big can Shih Tzu/Toy Poodle hybrids grow?

Shih poos are small to tiny dogs, usually measuring eight to 18 inches at the withers and weighing eight to 18 pounds. Their coat can be anywhere in between curly and short like a poodle, long, straight, and silky like a shih tzu’s, or curly and short like a shih tzu. Shih poos are a good choice for someone with mild pet allergies because despite their appearance, their coats hardly shed.

Both parent breeds can be inherited through coloring. Shih tzu coats can be solid or come in a variety of color patterns and combinations, unlike poodles whose solid coats are typically solid shades of black, white, gray, brown, or apricot. Both parents’ coloring patterns may be imitated by shoodle coats.

In many cases, the temperament of mixed-breed dogs balances the traits of their parent breeds. Shih tzus are usually very affectionate and adorable, but they can be challenging to train because of their stubborn nature. On the other hand, poodles are highly intelligent dogs who are more eager to please and easier to train. They are equally charming with playful and comedic personalities. Shih poos are consequently frequently affectionate, playful, and quick-witted small charmers, though they may also acquire the stubbornness of their shih tzu parents. They might not be the best choice for first-time dog owners because they frequently require a firm but patient trainer.

How long do Shih Poodles live?

Shih Poos have one of the longest life expectancies among Poodle mix breeds, with an average lifespan of 12 to 17 years. A Shih Poo’s lifespan is influenced by a wide range of variables, including size, gender, generation, and whether or not they have been desexed. They may live shorter or longer than average lives as a result of these factors. By engaging in daily exercise, providing a nutritious diet, and scheduling regular vet visits, you can give your Shih Poo the best chance of living a long life.

How big can Shih Poo grow to become?

They typically weigh 8 to 10 pounds and range in height from 8 to 13 inches. Moderate exercise is required of Shih Poos. They love to play and go on short to medium-length daily walks. They are the ideal size for indoor play because of their small size, and they will enjoy running around in a fenced-in yard.

Shih Poos are a relatively recent hybrid, so they don’t have a long history, but its parent breeds have fascinating, well-researched histories.

One of the oldest breeds still in existence, the Shih Tzu was a favorite of Chinese emperors during the Tang dynasty (618–907) and was kept at court. Although their exact ancestors are unknown, experts think that the Lhasa Apso is a cross between a small Chinese dog breed like the Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso of Tibet. During the Ming dynasty, Shih Tzus gained popularity among the common people of China, but they nearly vanished during the Chinese Revolution. All of today’s Shih Tzus are descendants of the seven males and seven females who were miraculously saved. In the early 1900s, they started to appear in North America and other nations. Apsos was a common name for them. Clubs recogn
izing the differences between Shih Tzus and Apsos were not founded until 1934 and 1935, but a standard outlining the distinctive qualities of the Shih Tzu wasn’t created until 1938. These lively little puppies were brought home from England by World War II veterans who were returning to the United States. Shih Tzus were approved by the American Kennel Club in 1969 as a toy breed. They rose to fame in the U. S. quickly and are still well-liked today.

What exactly is a mini Shih Poo?

In comparison to the Toy Shihpoo, the Miniature Shihpoo is a little bigger. A mini poodle and a shih tzu were crossed to create the Mini Shihpoo. Shih Tzus are about 9-10 points tall and weigh 9-16 pounds, whereas Mini Poodles are about 15 inches tall and weigh 12-20 pounds.

The average adult Mini Shihpoo is between 10 and 13 inches tall and weighs between 15 and 20 pounds.

Rarely, if at all, do Shih Tzus breed with Standard Poodles. Thus, there is no Standard Shihpoo.

What size can a Shih Tzu/toy poodle mix reach?

It is simple to infer that the Shih Poo will be diminutive given that both of their parents are diminutive. A Shih Poo typically weighs 8 to 18 pounds and stands between 8 and 18 inches tall. Shih Poo size will vary, though, just as Poodle and Shih Tzu sizes can range from teacup to miniature to standard.

They are small, but their bodies are strong. Along with having a round face and wide-set eyes, they have a cute appearance that you’re sure to adore.

Shih Poo coats can be long and silky or short and curly, depending on the breed. They can inherit either the straight or curly coat from either of their Poodle or Shih Tzu parents, or a combination of the two, which is more likely.

What does a toy poodle/Shih Tzu mix look like?

The Shih-Poo is a hybrid dog made up of Shih Tzu and Toy Poodle dogs. These puppies shared some of the best traits from both of their parents and are small, hypoallergenic, and cuddly companions.

Shih-Poos are also known as Shoodles or Pooshis, but these names should not be confused with those of the Poo-Shi, the Poodle/Shiba Inumix. These mixed-breed dogs may be found in shelters and rescues despite the fact that they are considered a designer breed. Don’t shop, instead, remember to adopt!

Anyone would enjoy having a Shih-Poo as a companion, but an elderly person in their retirement would likely be the best fit. They enjoy being spoiled, loved, and given special attention. They can survive in almost any setting, whether it be a family home, an apartment, or a tiny house in the middle of nowhere.

What do you call a Shih Tzu/Poodle mix?

The Shihpoo is a hybrid breed made up of a Shih Tzu and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. He may have a Shih Tzu’s long, straight coat or a Poodle’s curly coat, but he always has a sweet expression and a strong build. Similar to his parent breeds, the Shihpoo is capable of sporting a wide range of solid colors as well as particolor patterns (a color plus white).

Shihpoos are affectionate, playful, and friendly dogs who love to cuddle up on their owners’ laps. Generally speaking, they weigh between 7 and 20 pounds, depending on the size of their parent breeds. They are courageous for their size and make great watchdogs, but they can be a bit yappy.

If you have older kids who know how to handle a dog gently, consider getting a Shihpoo. If you can’t always be there to watch over their interactions, toddlers can be careless and may hurt a Shihpoo.

What conditions are Shih Poos prone to?

The same health issues as their parent breeds can predispose shih poos, despite the fact that they typically live long lives—some can reach 17 years or more. These include endocrine conditions like Addison’s disease, hypothyroidism, and Cushing’s disease as well as allergies, patellar luxation, vision issues, and allergies. Respiratory problems, reverse sneezing, and snoring may also be more common in Shih Poos who inherit the shorter snout of the Shih Tzu. According to Dogtime, extra precautions should be taken to avoid overheating and heat stroke. These dogs may be susceptible to dental issues, like many small breeds, and will benefit from routine dental cleanings and daily tooth brushing.

No matter how long or soft your shih poo’s coat is, it will always be thick, quick to grow, and prone to matting. To keep the coat under control, daily brushing and monthly grooming appointments are advised. To avoid the skin drying out, take a bath no more than a few times per month. Preventing water from entering the ear canals while bathing will help to avoid the development of ear infections.

Shoodles have normal appetites and if given the opportunity will eat too much, gaining unhealthful amounts of weight. Rather than allowing them to graze on kibble all day, it is preferable to keep them on a regular feeding schedule. Feed your puppy a high-quality dog food designed for small breeds, and limit the amount of treats they receive.

Although it can be much smaller for teacup varieties, their height is typically around 13 inches. Although most weigh less than 25 pounds, a fully grown adult Shih Poo can weigh up to 25 pounds. Puppies that are almost ready to be weaned weigh about one pound.

Despite the relatively good health of the Shih Poo breed, there may be some issues with this crossbreed. You should keep an eye on how much food you give them because they have a propensity to overeat. These tiny dogs are also prone to dental problems and bad breath, so it’s important to keep them healthy with size-appropriate kibble, appropriate dental cleanings, and dental treats. The short snout of your pet may make breathing difficult if it did not inherit the longer nose of the Poodle. Their nose may have breathing issues more frequently the shorter it is. H
ip dysplasia, eye conditions, and luxating patella, where the kneecap frequently pops out of place, are less common but more serious conditions to watch out for.

  • Absolutely on point. Stubborn, yet they are very aware. Almost like seeing how much they can get away with. Treats and praises rewards for good behavior and following commands works well. Kennel time-out as reminder of bad behavior works well with training. Teaching the word come and tone with expected response to follow the command is an early “life saver” for the curious Shi-poo. High energy and independent YES THEY ARE!!

  • Beautiful dogs…😊 I received a ShihPoo 17 years ago. He was a gift from heaven, I truly believe that. I wasn’t around dogs nor did I ever own one previous to Him. He walked for miles, very smart, non-shedding and surprisingly independent. I worked full-time and he was really well behaved. I always made sure he had a window to look out. His health declined 4 months ago and I had to make the horrible decision 😭. Man I loved that dog. He was white with pale tan spots on his tail and ears, he looked like a teddy bear. I am very grateful for the beautiful 17 years of ownership. I learned how to groom him too. I must have saved thousands of dollars!

  • I had a full blooded Shih Tzu. She passed away in 2016. We got a Shih-Poo about a week later. Yes there is a great difference in the 2. I also used to have a toy Poodle. The mixture takes a lot of the good qualities of both breeds. Katie has the hair And tail of the Shih-Tzu, the teeth of the poodle And a little bit longer nose than a Shih Tzu. She sleeps a lot. But when its time for walks and food or treats she will tell you its time. She gets hyper and wants attention from everyone. If I stop to talk to someone on our walk she wants to join in the conversation. She whines if either my husband or myself are out of her range at any given time. As soon as she sees us she gets all excited.

  • My Shipoo learned early on how best to get my attention. He’d come up to me and put his paw on my arm and look at me. Many times it was his way of letting me know he wanted to go outside for his business. I trained him from day one to go outside on a regular basis. It was always 1st thing in the am and last thing before bed plus regular intervals during the day. The first six months I even got up half way thru the night. It was a pain but he learned that he was to go outside, day or night, winter or summer. He’s not had an accident in the house since he was 5 months and now is 19 months old. He’s a good boy

  • I love my shihpoo! He’s by far the coolest, smartest and cutest dog I’ve ever had! I had always had shih tzu’s or retrievers but this shih poo stole my heart! Very lovable, hilarious and he has loved my granddaughter from the moment she was born. He’s protected her and played with her and when she spends the night my shih poo wants to sleep with her and the next morning my shih poo tries to wake her up. I HIGHLY recommend a shihpoo for anyone that wants a wonderful companion, best friend and very easy to train pup. I want another one. He’s the best. He also has a lot of the character of a shih tzu. If you love shih tzus you will love shih poos

  • I agree, this is 100% spot on. I have a 10yo shih poo, first small dog I’ve ever been around frequently or raised. He is the best dog in the world. When my mom lived with me, he took complete care of her, to the point where I couldn’t believe it. He takes care of me, too. He could probably hike longer, but he’s gone on 5 mile hikes with me before (I’m a birder). Like the article said, if you put in some effort to establish alpha, and treat the dog well of course, this dog will be obedient to you. Thank you so much for the article.

  • Pretty much spot-on! We call ours a “Shoodle”. She’s 10mths old and black with white splashes, pretty much like the one at 3:10 . She’s both smart, and incredibly dumb at the same time. Chews and eats anything and everything, often until she makes herself sick. Shreds pillows, dog beds, shoes. She knows when she’s got something she shouldn’t have, and tries to sneak out of sight with it. And stubborn! After about 4 weeks of puppy obedience training, she simply refused to co-operate with any commands (heel, sit, stand, drop, etc). Yet she will behave on-lead if I talk nicely, eg “No, this way” or “Come away from that”. She wants to sleep on our bed, but doesn’t like sharing with both of us, so she does move to her own bed on the floor. But at the first sign that one of us is awake in the morning, we both get smothered in licky dog. During the day, she has two speeds – sleep (in crazy positions) and ZOOM!

  • Our ShiPoo is 4 months old. She goes into her cage at9pm and gets up at 7am which is great we all get our sleep. However potty training not going as well. We’ll get a good day then watch out the next day. She is very loving and cute as the Duce. We can’t go anywhere that people stop us to see her. She eats everything dirt and rocks included we have to keep an eye on here every minute. Very playful and doesn’t shed a great dog to have if you have allergies.

  • Our Shih Poo is 2 years old. Very friendly and very attached to us. She loves attention and wants to play every moment she is awake, however, after chasing the ball or (her favorite) tag with a sock, she is content and ready to sleep. She used to sleep with us… in fact, she would bark to go to sleep with her! But, now she prefers to sleep alone on the couch. The only thing we find ‘odd’ is that she loves chewing on my husband’s finger but she doesn’t on mine. We adore her! She is super sweet, obedient but we can’t take her outside without her lease… she loves to run and to be chased…so we are afraid she’ll get away. We have a fenced in area for her to run and play. Shih Poos do not shed but she does get knots that we have to cut out when we find them, otherwise, she gets matted. This is why they need to be brushed everyday. They are very lovable and I encourage to get one! You won’t regret it! ❤

  • I am a first time owner of a shi-poo or any dog actually. But when I saw this little puppy I just had to have him. He’s just 5 months old now and the last few days he has a doggy smell and I bath him like twice a week and blow him dry. He don’t mind his bath or the blow dryer. But does anyone know why he has this odor? He’s the prettiest little thing ever with his white and his golden spots on his ears. He’s very active and works himself into a good nap afterwards.
