For small dogs, what flea treatment is the safest?

For tick and flea protection, siparica is a great option. As part of Simparica Trio, the monthly chew also offers heartworm prevention. But even though Simparica is typically a secure flea and tick treatment for dogs, it shouldn’t be given to those animals who have a history of seizures.

Trifexis uses milbemycin oxime and spinosad to protect dogs from fleas, heartworms, and intestinal parasites, but it is ineffective against ticks. This treatment must be recommended by your veterinarian.

Up to 12 weeks of flea and tick protection are provided by Bravectochews (also available as a topical). Fluralaner, the substance’s active ingredient, kills adult fleas and ticks. A prescription from your veterinarian is also necessary for Bravecto. However, just like Simparica, Bravecto shouldn’t be given to dogs who have experienced seizures in the past.

To how many fatalities is Simparica connected?

The overall death rate up to April 2021 was 2,627 (24%) for fluralaner (Bravecto®), 726 (28%%) for afoxolaner (NexGard®), and 412 (12.7%%) for sarolaner (Simparica®).

After Simparica, why is my dog acting strangely?

Your dog may become restless after beginning a flea treatment regimen for a few reasons. The most frequent explanation is that the dog is no longer getting flea bites because the fleas are being killed. The dog may become restless as a result of this itching and discomfort. Dogs may also experience irritation and restlessness from the chemicals in some flea treatments. The ingredients in flea medicine may also cause an allergic reaction in some dogs, which can also cause restlessness.

Speak to your veterinarian if you’re worried about your dog’s agitation after beginning a flea treatment regimen. They can assist you in figuring out whether the agitation is brought on by the flea treatment or if there is another underlying issue.

  • I’ve been using diatomaceous earth for years! It’s great in chicken coops and the yard. Great dewormer as well! I’ve worked in the vet field for years. And it was always mind boggling how the Dr’s would push the chemicals. Then claim they are about holistic’s. I would on a down low recommend this. ESP for clients not being able to afford the expensive stuff. I mean cmon we are supposed to be helping pets, not pushing big pharma agenda profits. Same with over vaccinations. I’ve since left that field for many many reasons.

  • I’m so glad I came across this as a licensed breeder of small yorkies I decided to take the holistic route on flea and tick as well as vaccinations. I loss my very first yorkie in 2011 as a result from being over vaccinated and using frontline every since I stop using those products all 10 of my fur babies are living a very happy healthy and free of viruses and fleas and ticks life thanks . I also recommend my clients to subscribe

  • The fab thing about diatomaceous earth is that parasites (fleas/ticks) can never evolve to evade it as it’s not a chemical action, but rather a mechanical action. It’s fab. I’ve used it for years, it 100% works, and my cats never have ticks or fleas and they’re both outside cats in Nova Scotia (tick central.) I use a toothbrush and I apply it, keeping the bristles very close to the skin. I brush it in from the base of the tail to the nape of the neck (dragging the brush backward through the fur.) Then I make a ring around the neck, and then from chin tip down to breast. I’ve seen many articles doing the whole body dusting thing. There’s no need. You don’t need that much dust flying around — just tail to nape, around the neck and under the chin.

  • Diatomaceous earth is great as a wound covering powder for pets who can’t easily wear band-aids. It rapidly desiccates the wound, forms a solid crust, incorporating the powder with the fibrin formed as the wound scabs and may prevent bacterial contamination, and infection. Chemically, it is finely divided microporous silica, so potentially may cause silicosis if breathed into the lungs, but practically, the amount of exposure is very small. Interesting fact 1: it is mined from ancient lake bed deposits where the bodies of microscopic green aquatic algae called diatoms, which form an internal silica shell of 2 halves called frustules, perorated with holes for gas and nutrient exchange, formed a sediment over geological time and turned to a fossil containing rock, sometimes called Kieselguhr. There may be millions of diatom species in marine, fresh water and damp locations globally. Interesting fact 2: it has an amazingly large surface area due to the micropores. Alfred Nobel mixed this substance with nitro-glycerine to form the high explosive known as dynamite, making it safe to transport and handle. It may also be used in toothpastes and metal polishes as a fine abrasive.

  • You may want to use a funnel to transfer the diatomaceous earth from bag to the bottle. We’ve also spread it on our lawn during (what we call) the flea season. Before I found out about that product, I would sprinkle flea powder into my rugs & work it into the fibers (vacuum first) every week during spring & summer. Of course, this meant I would be using a broom during the week so as to keep the powder in the rug fibers but hey, it worked.

  • DE is great to use on feral cats, since it can be used in the places where they sleep and eat if you take care of a colony. One of my ferals has a terrible flea allergy and loses all his hair but he’s also fairly tame with me and loves pets so its fairly easy to rub DE on him. A lot of vets like to say that the risk of respiratory or digestive problems is too high but if you use it safely and sparsely, its perfectly safe. Concern comes from cats licking it off of themselves but ingesting DE helps with internal parasites regardless.

  • Thank you for all your articles. They help us be the best pet parents we can be. We realize big pharma protects its profits/interest, and the gods over veterinarian education protect the future profits of their students. That being said, thank you for your sacrifices and talking points to our pet professionals. Thank you, for helping us with our family’s health care and having happier more comfortable fur babies.

  • Thanks Doc. You’re looking healthy bud, full and color in your cheeks. I hope if you had anything going on that you’re well. I can vouch for the diotomacious earth, my chickens love dust baths in it and bentonite clay, (they flip out when I set them out a fresh pan of it, fight over turns), and I brush my teeth with the same combo. ** I should note that I saturate it before brushing my teeth so it isn’t air born.

  • Thanks for your website. The last decade or so vets have become so expensive some pet owners just can’t afford to get basic vet care for their pets. Last time I asked mine what effective flea treatment they had that would work, I was recommended the latest one which was about £70/80! So nearly a hundred pounds for something that is supposed to be a regular expense. How they expect anyone to be able to afford it it mind boggling. So the effect of their stance is that less pets can access care, which is anthema to the point of their profession. I only use mine for acute injuries at this stage, which they are great for. And tbh, my pets are healthier for it. The last cats I’ve had, sans vaccinations and on raw food, are the healthiest cats I’ve ever had, and I’ve had several in my lifetime.

  • I am just extremely pleased to know that there’s veterinarians that actually care about not poisoning animals and thinking out of the box diatomaceous earth is one of the best choices by far I’ve been using it in my indoor garden for years and works well with any larva laying insects I wish you were a veterinarian in my area because I would definitely be bringing my pets to you best of luck in everything you do

  • You can make a simple funnel with a piece of paper by rolling into a cone shape, leaving a hole on the pointed end large enough to fit into the opening of the jar. 🙂 I use diatomaceous earth every Spring and Summer around my windows and door jams to keep ants out. It works great but if it rains and the powder gets wet, you have to reapply it. I’ve also sprinkled it into my cats litter boxes to keep beetles out during the dry end of summer when the bugs are looking for moisture anywhere they can get it.

  • For years I’ve used borax brushed in the carpet, sprinkled in my dogs bed, and dusted around the outside of my house and I’ve never had to put anything on my dogs skin. It takes two weeks for the fleas to disappear completely but 100% works. Research and make your own judgement. Love your articles!!! 💕🤗

  • I use this all the time for my chicken house and chickens all the time…….it works so well plus it prolongs grains for storage…..this can also be used in food as a wormer……for use on dogs and cats I sieve the power first then put in an old talcum powder tub. Great Chanel and such good advice….I used to spend a fortune on flea treatment….not anymore

  • Hi doc, just discovered your website. Love it. Question: I’m nervous about how easily this powder becomes a cloud. Can you speak more specifically about the risks of breathing it in—for me and the dogs? I’m wearing a surgical mask. Is this enough? I’m careful not to be too vigorous as I comb it in, but it only takes minimal movement to create a dust cloud. And in your article, you comb it in pretty aggressively. Thanks.

  • I just recently found your website; I love it!! As a long time pet groomer/parent, I’ve seen first paw what vets are charging for basic services; especially these days 🙄. Pet owners can be very gullible and desperate when the doctor tells them there is only one option and this is it. Can’t afford it? Don’t worry, we offer credit at a million % interest. 😆😮‍💨 I’m very cautious about health advice for clients pets, due to my lack of medical training; however I always try to come up with alternate options for my clients pet’s issues. I love diatomaceous earth, I use it in the garden, around the house etc. I’m relieved to see you were very specific about what type folks should get. Great usage idea, Especially for those with a large animal family. You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your holistic knowlege. ❤️

  • So just a heads up I’ve been feeding the raw diet on some days and then I cook home made meals plus supplements on some days. I also take my animals to a more advanced vet in Oakland ca who is smarter and holistic Your previous recipe of witch hazel and aloe, lemon, lavender, and cedar wood oil has been working since the day you uploaded that article before this recipe I was purchasing the Wondercide online Here’s what I do to be 100% sure my dogs are not getting fleas. I have them sleep in white sheets over their beds and Every morning I spray the sheet with spray bottle. If the dirt specs turn to blood then that is flea poop. For the last 7 YEARS I’ve been using this method and have not had any fleas!! I also never allow my friends to come in my house with shoes shoes are left outside. I use the diatomaceous earth food grade all along the corners of my home . I also netted by yard with Catnets and used the DE in the landscspe. If you do this you never have to vaccinate your cats and you won’t get fleas either!

  • thanks so much for this article I’ve had a gallon of that stuff for 4 years and I forgot I had it until I heard you say that word and I have been fighting fleas on my six rescue cats so bad they’ve becoming anemic they ended up with tapeworm which I hear that stuff is good for that too I just absolutely love your website

  • Thank you so much for this!!! I bought my cats seresto collars (I’m sure you know those aren’t cheap) and I’ve never had any problems in years before but this year they just aren’t cutting it. I was so worried that there was just nothing I could do to help them because I’m so nervous to try any new medicines, one of my cats had a very bad reaction to a flea treatment once. You’re a life (and skin!) saver!

  • I found DE too messy and ended up clogging up my hoover and it dried my dogs skin too much … I found rubbing some coconut oil through her fur also killed the fleas as they don’t like oil so maybe do some coconut oil rubs through the fur in between using the DE if skin is drying out .. 🐺💕 also I think it worth noting that DE can irritate dogs eyes so cover eyes whilst apply near head area 🙌🙏💕

  • If your dog has really dry skin you can simply feed them raw almonds daily it helps with better oil production. I do this for myself during the winter months. And all I eat is about 8 to 10 raw almonds every afternoon throughout the dry months. It would be very simple to add this to your dogs food daily.

  • My dog dislikes anything I’m trying to apply on him, he runs and hides, but when I bring out the shaker with DE, he turns on his back and patiently lets me sprinkle it on him. Last year was the worst flea season. I’ve overdone it with the Diatomeceous earth and it did dry his skin. I’m trying to apply it more on his fur than on skin. It is great for cats. All, mine and outdoor cats get a sprinkle daily during the flea season.

  • You are soooO sweet with your family members, such a pleasure to watch your articles, you always make me giggle. We have come across this before and wondered how safe it is so thank you for the confirmation . I recommend your website to others because I trust you and know you do great work for all animals, woofer and out from my little four pawed friend ;D <3

  • Recommendation apply using a baking sifter thing use use to put powedered sugar on a cake or flower on a baking dish works great on chickens and in chicken house. Use it efficiently and evenly. Also would recommend doing in on top of a tray thing or where you can sweep it back in container or something to use again. Works on ants too if you have an ant problem or slug problem in the garden. So maybe use the “reused” stuff that falls around him or her that you sweep up there. Also but need to double check but you can buy a 50 pound sack (I think it’s 50 might be less) from Tractor Supply or some kind of Farm Livestock Feed Store for lot cheaper I think it was like $25- $30? Vs a small container for $15? Need to double check on food grade but pretty certain it is since it’s meant for animals. Just don’t breathe it in. Only time I recommend a mask 😉

  • we have had diotamaceous earth for years but never used it. We were always concerned about the lung breathing issue. We have an infestation now and our cats are miserable.. and I have been procrastinating about getting the toxic treatments and my partner and I work all the time. (We take care of a cat colony). I have started to do the bowl with dishwashing liquid and a light in the room with the cats. That is actually effective…. and I pulled all the bedding and put it in a plastic bag with diatomaceous earth and closed the bag up.. and started to shake it (DOn’t do this). the garbage bag doesn’t contain the aerosolized DE… so I just put the bag outside until we can run a load of wash Hopefully that will kill any eggs etc.. I am now trying an experiment of using Coconut oil on one of our shorthair cats. Hopefully we will get this situation under control here. What a mess.

  • Great article – we have a flea problem ever since feral cats moved in the neighborhood and the fleas are all in the yard. I have been afraid to use the food grade DE for fear of my little dog (12 lb ShihTzu) inhaling it. Will try on a small scale and see if it works for us. Am more comfortable spreading in the yard. And I hope people caught that you have to use FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH SO AS NOT TO HARM ANIMALS OR HUMANS. Thank you!

  • I will confirm that this FOOD grade DE (Diatomaceous Earth) works. The year we spayed and neutered our cats and had to keep them from going outside while they healed (these are normally outside cats when it’s warm enough to be out there, great mousers for around our pole barn), well they had fleas which resulted in flea infestation in our house. We tried everything we could use naturally to get rid of them to no avail). My husband did some research online and found this product and bought some for us to try. Well I sprinkled it all over the carpet, corners, crevices, etc. After a few days we saw less and less fleas but kept up with using the product until we didn’t see anything, I would say it was 2-3 weeks. It got rid of the fleas in our home and works great on the cats as well. We also treated the cats when they got worms, just fed a tiny bit in some canned cat food and made sure each cat got the same dose, within a week worms were gone, but we kept going for 2 weeks to make sure. Today, they are good-sized cats, healthy and happy cats! Thank you Dr. for sharing all these great natural products with us. If you lived near me, you would be my vet. I would recommend wearing a good mask while sprinkling too, it isn’t good to inhale too much of this, but with care and patience, it can be easily done. Also thank you Dr for the tip of the shaker bottle, I didn’t even think of that and the flea comb, very smart! Have a great day! 😊

  • Thank you for doing these articles. Here’s my question. I live in Hudson Valley, NY.. currently the worst hit area for deer ticks carrying the bacteria causing Lyme Disease. I just saw your article on Bravecto, which I’ve been giving my GSD for a few years now, but she’s about to turn 11, & now I don’t want to give it to her. The thing is, the ticks out here are ubiquitous, & I’ve had a hard time keeping them off her in the past. I don’t feel confident your natural remedy of cedar oil will be sufficient. Any suggestions for safer prescription flea/tick medicine that’s safer?

  • I also use diatomaceous earth food grade by sprinkling it around my house and fire pit, in my garden, etc. if I start to see bugs trying to get inside again, I go around the house again. Probably about once a year. I use a mask and goggles with a paper cup to sprinkle it around the grass. It is safe for our pets.

  • Use a small funnel to fill a spice container. I dont use a very small spice container but a medium sized one..if the holes are too large, tape off some of them from the underside of the lid. If your not going to use a respirator I suggest turning on a fan and doing it outside, or inside with the fan…either way…just so you dont create a pallor of dust youre both standing in. Be sure to administer a flea bath before doing he Diatomaceous earth treatment bc it does not kill them instantly, so just applying DE to the dog affords the fleas time to exit your dogs fur and then ne in your carpets, etc…not a winning solution, so bathe the dog first for the initial killing. face (around the eyes, ears and neck first). Since the DE is not a long term treatment, I take @ a Tbl. Spoon of cloves, and rosemary and put it into a coffee grinder untill its a very fine powder.. then mix it into the entire bucket or bag of DE..their fur will absorb the aroma of the cloves and rosemary and deter fleas for a longer period of time.. if you have fleas on a biblical level like i do because i live in a heavily wooded area, just go ahead and carpet the yard with it too, doorways, welcome mats and around the edge of the house, decking…the powdered rosemary and clove repel mosquitos snd any other thing with wings too. I have literally spent 2 hours in the supermarket writing down every active ingredient in every brand of flea control product. I then researched every chemical, and its harmful effects.

  • Hi there, I’ve been perusal your website for a long time, and enjoy you very much! All you have to share makes total sense! I love DE, but also started using a product that I’m delighted with. It’s called Guardian’s Choice. It is all natural, and is a deterrent for fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Since I’ve been using it, I’ve had no problems with any of these pests. I just put it into my dogs dinner meal and it’s done. The cost is about $28 for a 3 months supply, which is way less expensive then the topical flea preparations, which I hate using on my dog. He’s not crazy about me putting those on either. Anyway it’s also free shipping. So all in all I’ll never go back to using anything else! 🤗💖👌🐕🧚‍♂️🌷

  • I have 7 stray cats outside that I feed and have two areas with cat litter on the dirt for them. Cats are supper clean and poop in designated areas, unlike my yorkie😂. It is great because flies and bugs stay away. I just ordered the food grade type so I can apply it topically. I have not seen fleas on cats but my Yorkie has had a few, so everyone is getting treated. Thanks for tips, I will use a funnel to fill the jar.

  • Teeny-Tiny Diatom skeletons are sharp and shaped like half of a rice ‘checks’ that has been rolled into a tube. They scratch the chitinous insect shell and kill by dehydration. They have no effect on worms and other shell-less insects so they are safe to use in the garden, where you might want to use food-grade rather than swimming pool, etc. grade.

  • I keep a spare screw top jar to hand when treating our dogs with Diatomaceous Earth and any fleas I see at the time get caught and put in the jar straight away. If you drop the fleas in & give it a shake so they’re completely submerged, they’ll still be moving but can’t jump out if you have more to put in. Fortunately for us, our two are a short haired breed & a wheaten colour so it’s easier to spot them when the DE initially hits the fleas & puts them on the move. Have only recently found and subscribed to this website & love it!

  • DE can be purchased at feed stores and garden shops. I love it for chickens and some other things, but it’s not very practical when you need to dust a bunch of sheep or 150# sheep dogs, just because of trying to get the powder worked through the dense fleece/fur and down to the skin where it needs to go in order to be fully effective. So, in those instances, we turn to chemical meds as much as we dislike doing so. That being said, we only just had to use advantix for the second time in 7 years on our dogs 🙂 For kittens and other small animals, or for an animal in distress from ectoparasite load, the mayonnaise bath is AWESOME!!! Take your cat/kitten/pet rat and smother it in mayo, starting at the orifices. Then, place said pet in the bathtub and lock it in the bathroom while you vacuum the house. Once your house is clean, shower off your pet and your flea problem literally goes down the drain, one and done!!! The mayo traps and suffocates fleas, but also suffocates the eggs! I did this once for a stray kitten and my rats who caught her fleas back in 1999, and again in 2001 when my indoor cat caught fleas from probably a visitor.

  • I haven’t found DE to be very effective. I have found raw, organic apple cider vinegar with the mother in it mixed 50/50 with water and rubbed into my dog’s coat… very effective. If you have an environmental infestation, you’ll have to apply every day until you get rid of the fleas in the environment. Nematodes in the yard and extensive vacuuming and keeping your humidity down below 50% with a dehumidifier, along with frequent combing (dropping live fleas into a container with soapy water)… works. I do put DE along baseboards and behind couch cushions… it just isn’t very effective… neither are the topical poisons, which can cause serious side effects, even death. Meanwhile, raw, organic apple cider vinegar is good for the coat, skin, and internal systems.

  • My dog missed her last treatment( my mistake) and she got fleas. I have the Harris food grade DE. I gave my dog her monthly credelio flea pill, but just started doing this. I wasn’t sure how safe or effective it is. But I guess I will see. She stills bites at her skin once in a while like there’s a flea or something. I don’t know what’s going on, but I treated the house as well with DE on the carpets and furniture. I am gonna wait 48 hrs before I vacuum and then spray the Adam’s. But I heard that adams is pretty potent. Going crazy here! I don’t see any fleas nor had any jumped on me. But the only one I seen was the one right before her flea pill on her belly. I can barely even find any bites! But I know it was fleas!!! Her scratching is definitely decreasing, so I guess it’s a time thing. Idk. Tough to fix when you have kids and beds and the dog is everywhere in the house. Way too much work, all because I forgot her pill one month!!!

  • We use freshly squeezed lemon and water spritzed on the coat, the fleas go running to the tummy area where I catch them with the tweezers lol. It’s quite the event but it works. Also if you take a cotton ball soaked in lemon and water and put it directly on the flea, it stops it in it’s tracks and you have time to catch it and kill it.

  • Thank you so much!!! You are so awesome 😊🐾❤ I have almost 20 animal, all of them rescues, half of them are looking for good homes. Is hard in my country, so much street animals and no one wanna help them.. Is hard to keep up with the food by it self, not to get some so expensive drops for fleas.. THANK YOU!! 🙏🐾🌹❤

  • I can attest to this Dr.! Thank you! When I lived in Seattle & then Eastern Wa State, I used this and Exactly what you said. It works!! That was many years ago. It also works for your garden, bugs, ants coming into the house! Also for internal parasites is what I’ve heard. All “FOOD GRADE” however! So, thank you for this article! I also reached out to you via Instagram and you responded back to me. Thank you so very much. I’m living up in Canada now… How about that?

  • Over here in India, there is a Company that makes Diatomaceous Earth Powder with some additives like Geraniol oil (?) And I have used this one my Golden Retriever and it works! But the thing about the diatomaceous earth is that its texture is kind of chalky and so after application the hair gets a little dry and also its smell on it’s own without some nice essential oil or stuff on top of it is kind of weird like it feels little industrial 😅 but that said I’m not complaining. I am not using Fipronil at all!

  • I want to start doing this diatomaceous earth treatment asap on my cats, but please give more info on the oils you mentioned to combat the dryness. You mentioned safflower oil, but would coconut oil work, too? In a previous article you mentioned once a week and to then give a bath, but in this article you mention every day for 14 days. If I am doing the every day, I presume I don’t give baths to remove the DA. Can I apply coconut oil to the cats first and the n the DA or DA and then oil? Or in another article I saw you used witchhazel and aloe Vera juice. I don’t want to use need oil on my cats but would a combo of aloe, witchhazel and coconut be good to moisturize their skin? Basically I’m wanting info on the oder of which comes first, DA or moisturizer. Thanks so much!

  • I made an ointment for my pitbull Trouble. He has extremely sensitive skin. He has a flea allergy. I used diatomaceous earth on his coat this morning. This evening I applied a generous amount of the ointment… which was a refrigerated whipped mixture of coconut oil, neem oil, tea tree oil and green tea.

  • I have not had luck with DE for fleas on my cats. I have a huge bag full, and used to use it by blowing it out of a spreader for powdered insecticide for the yard. It kills just about everything but fleas. It’s great on bedbugs, roaches, silverfish, etc. I have powdered my cats with it and did not have success. I have read others’ testimony to the same end. Not sure why it doesn’t work on fleas very well. I am having an infestation right now, and have spent my days vacuuming, flea combing, natural spraying for fleas, mopping with bleach, etc. But my cat can go in the yard for five minutes and come in with fleas. I have some other natural yard spray with cedar oil, and that is what I will be doing next. For carpets and patios, salt works like a charm. I swear by it. I even tried it in the yard, but it didn’t work there, only in the house and porch. Be careful, as I blew out two vacuum cleaners with DE on my rugs. It is very hard on the inner parts.

  • I love DE, but after applying around the house for spiders and fleas the powder killed my vacuum cleaner. I suggest vacuuming with a shop vac. My new FIV shelter kitty came with fleas. I’m using Alzoo flea collars and topical treatment on 2 cats but can’t touch FIV stray rescue #3. I’m not sure how to prevent the fleas from fleeing to him 🙂 I really don’t want to use pesticides, but the fleas are seriously multiplying.

  • Is diatomaceous earth safe to use on your pet’s fur? I had sprinkled a line on the outer edge of my carpet for flea control. I think the powder got into my dog’s eyes because he liked to lay down on the carpet against the wall. Afterwards, he ended up having eye issues and had to get expensive eye surgery. So, now I’m hesitant on using this near any of my dogs.

  • Kitty was mercilessly bullied for 2-1/2 of her first 3 years, so she’s skittish, afflicted with strong PTSD, and suspicious of any sort of medical treatment, especially ear mite meds and topically-applied substances. Capturing her for veterinary trips is next to impossible and she hides from strangers, so in-home vet visits – if I could afford one – are unlikely to be successful, and almost uniformly (I can be optimistic, can’t I?) result in degradation of whatever trust I have been able to build. She seems to be getting braver around repeat-visit people, but I think that’s because she’s lurking around the doorway, trying to get outside into the risky urban neighborhood. It takes three or four days for her to get hungry enough to be lured back inside to eat. The cycle repeats. Any suggestions? I really hate to see our trust decline, but I could use some new ideas.

  • Hi doctor, im a new subscriber. I was wondering if you knew if the brands Acana and Signature dog foods are good for Husky? I have a 22 month old Husky rescue and ive been feeding her a combination of purina pro 1 and acana or signature canned dog food. Im just wondering if thats a good combo? TY for any advice you can give me.

  • I buy mine in a nice 1-2lb bag cheap on eBay. I also use a powder sugar shaker for rugs and beds, covering more faster. I have a flea comb with metal tongs and that way if I find a flea I burn them suckers right in the comb with a lighter or candle. NICE to see a vet doing Holistic stuff instead of all the poisons! Oh, use a cheap vacuum cleaner or wet vac to vac up because it can screw up the motor in some. Keep this AWAY from flowering plants because it can kill BEES! Otherwise it works for Ants, Bed Bugs, Roaches, etc. Thank you Dr. Jones <3

  • For years, I have used Bryner as she is and garlic for dogs and cats to keep them sleep free. Once my pets ingested enough of this for two or three days to a week or so they are flea free. It comes in easy tablet form with beef broth so most pets like to eat it or it can be crumbled into a little wet food and they will eat it. Just follow the directions on the package and know that one tablet for every 10 pounds is just enough. Overdosing can cause a problem for some cats. Within 2-3 weeks my animals are used to it, they enjoy it and are flea free. I have started puppies and kittens on 1/4 to 1/2 tablet. This is of course the small tablet, not the larger size for big dogs.

  • Baking soda or salt on carpet and throw rugs: leave it on for three days, then vacuum the dried up flees. For the lawn: baking soda and Dawn liquid in a lawn sprayer, let the suds sink in. This will also render mosquitoes 🦟 sinkable from the Dawn liquid. They need to stand on the water to lay the eggs.

  • I just ordered it ..can’t wait till it arrives…my yorkie has some bumps that turned black on his back…I didn’t get to show the vet when he got his allergy needle..I’m a worried if there are fleas under his skin and I been looking for something more safe to put on him.he was treated for Lyme desease 2 months ago.thank you Dr Jones .all of your articles are so helpful and much appreciated ☺

  • It’s amazing that fleas exoskeleton has progressed & evolved, & hardened, like roaches!! That is what I’ve been reading about. THAT, is why many of the flea drops no longer work at all. All due to the the changes in the exoskeleton. Roaches around for a million years, now fleas want to survive, too. Eeew Angers me. I’ll have to give that a try very soon. Thanks for the article. Have a wonderful weekend!! 👍💯👍💯👍💯👍

  • Greatly appreciated info- THANKS! Reading thru comments here, can’t believe people focus in on ‘use a funnel’, or suggest editing. Sheesh. Or worse- Tom & Jason falsely harping on “the dangers”. Yes, Pool Grade diactemacous earth is very harmful, but he and everyone else is talking about FOOD GRADE.

  • Certainly this in conjunction with. Bravecto, Vet’s Best, spray and washing and vacuuming, and washing and vacuuming and washing and vacuuming. I got a head of what could have been a massive flea infestation. I stressed for a month thinking originally the scratching was psychological cuz I never saw a fleaa or bit. however I never thought of sprinkling it on the pet and using the Flea comb.

  • I’ve tried this a few times. but for some reason it didn’t seem all that great. but I do leave it on my carpet and it does kill them eventually on there. lol My chi hates the stuff my cat don’t mind it too bad tho. thanks for the tip. I wasn’t doing it every day and combing it thru I will try that method. thanks again. LOVE your articles

  • Yup, it works like a charm. Had a flea infestation due to my cats bringing them in from the outside and continuously getting reinfected. Sprinkled it on the wooden floor, brushed it in all the nooks and crannies. Results: the fleas died, as did the eggs and larvae. Did not sprinkle it on my pets themselves.

  • Haha … ‘it seemed like a good idea at the time’ 😀 Well I think it is a darned lot better than pesticide applications. I love the idea. I see that Tula still has the scar tissue from her horrific attack in the forest. Poor Tula. Give her a kiss from me please. Doc ….. please will you make a article on giving dogs chicken bones particularly. I cringe when I see people giving their dogs bones and my opinion, people are uneducated. If I am wrong, I take it back. I love your articles … thank you 🐾💘🎶 Elaine from South Africa

  • I had never seen this before so looked it up on the internet and read what vets have said about it, they say don’t apply it direct to your pets as inhaling can cause lung problems. It only kills fleas it doesn’t kill the eggs so spreading around the house doesn’t really get rid of the flea problem. I’m always looking for an alternative to eliminating fleas for my outdoor cats but I think I’ll wait and speak to my vet first before I try it out.

  • Thank you thank you thank you, 2022 one of the hottest summers we have ever had in the UK has been a nightmare honestly,we have tried everything, including bomb ing the house with flea bomb! Flea pips at the neck,we have 10 pedigree Rag-dolls and they have suffered, when I had a litter,I had to use boiling water to drown the ones caught in the combs and I’ve never had this problem before till that summer, nightmare is at the worst, one of my girls has now got mange,I’ve tried every thing I’ve even got two flea traps on the carpets, I need help badly 😢

  • It’s April 11th and I’m finding ticks that must have come from my dog who’s been having seizures. His two preventative meds are known to be the possible culprits. They are NexGard and Heartgard. I will discontinue their use and, as for one, I’ll switch to diatomaceous earth. What can we use to prevent heartworm?

  • I’ve always one or twice a year brush 20 mule team borax into all my carpets, inside dog beds, between mattresses and under couch cushions. I wear a duets mask while I am putting it around the house. Any Participants are not good for your lungs, so I wear a dust mask, and a week later when I vacuum it up. Enough remains imbedded in the carpet to be affective for 6 month’s minimum. It not only kills fleas in all Stages, but cleans and refreshes carpets and mattresses as a plus. Also, any fleas that get on my dog do not survive. I don’t know if the jump o to their beds and die. For over 35 years, I have not had fleas.

  • DE works. I have always had multiple pets. I simply dip my Two fingers into a bit of de and gently, slowly get the nape of the neck, then butt and spine trying not create a plume of dust. Wash their bedding etc and apply a bit in tneir bed. It is a game changer for ants as well. So e health food stores will carry food grade de, feed stores, hardware stores and pet stores. Thank you fortne excellent article.

  • Thanks Doc I will try this, tho I have been putting this on my carpet for years . I do not have fleas in my carpet. I check with my little trap. I close the room, put on a mask or hankie over my face sprinkle well . broom it in gently .. a couple hours later i vacuum very well (do not forget the mask) I get them on the dogs from time to time but they cannot live in the carpet!!!!!

  • No no no…. LISTEN UP EVERYBODY-!!! I’m about to let you all in on a natural way to nourish your dog and control fleas & ticks, without doing anything else…. I don’t have a cat, so I don’t know if works for cats. 5 1/2 years ago, got our Border Collie puppy, began feeding her “Fromme”, per advice from breeder, but had also read that “grain-free” was best for dogs, so also read that a super healthy “dog treat” is “dehydrated beef liver”, because all dogs came from wolves, and when they hunt, they always eat the liver, heart, brains, and other organ meats first.. and she LOVES the liver so we kept her on it… after about a year, we realized, “wow, why do all these dogs in our neighborhood have fleas & ticks, and our dog has never had “1”… nor have we used and flea & tick products..?” So in doing research, found that liver is very high in “B vitamins”, which are water soluable, so no worries of overdosing, and fleas & ticks HATE THE SMELL OF B VITAMINS ON A DOG…!!! 😃 WOW…!!! So now she’s 5 1/2, and the only time she’s ever had a couple of fleas, was when we ran out of liver for 2 weeks, because our usual company was back ordered.. then after about 2 weeks of her eating the liver again, all fleas were GONE!👍 EVERYONE should know about this miracle..!! My husband told his father, and now their dogs are “flea-free” too- We have literally seen fleas jump onto our dog, then jump right off, when she’s outside… give it about 2 weeks to begin working, and in the meantime, spray a 50/50 Water/Apple Cider vinegar mixture on dog’s fur, to repel fleas in the house or outside.

  • I know I’m late to this article, but I found it nonetheless. Does the DE only kill the adult fleas, or does it also kill the other life stages? Does anyone know how much, and how often I should add it to my dog’s food? I have a year old German Shephard that is 75-85lbs (probably more, haven’t weighed him in a minute, so I’m underestimating as a precaution )

  • Dr. Jones, are you connected to PayPal or Buy Me a Coffee so we can donate to you? You seriously are providing us with priceless information (although I have used DE for years) lol. Plus, I want to support you for walking away from Big Pharma. Very soon, the criminal element who hold our professional licenses hostage to threaten or coerce will fall. In the meantime, you deserve support.

  • Can this be diluted with water and then put into a spray bottle and used as a spray instead? It would be much easier to use ensuring even distribution throughout the coat. I think that dusting it on would miss any criter in hiding. I already use the food grade one for my 2 yorkies in their food once a day. I used to use the topical flea and tick product which did work untill my girl developed a rash down her back after appication so I stopped using that for both. They are house pets and only go out to do their “thing” and always on leash. I HATE FLEAS and TICKS. They get the oral treament now… they do not get these bugs. Thank you Dr. JONES

  • Treat your yards front and back. Squirrels and other wild animals carry them to your yard. We never had flea problems. But I saw just the other day we have 6 squirrels visit us, so first time my dog has had a problem in his 4 years with us. Squirrels = fleas. They sell 50lbs bags for yard work and local veterinarian supply stores. also good to keep things like cockroaches that are outdoors killed you can also put this on your carpets for the fleas and vacuum up after a day or two.

  • Hey Doc, we have a 8 year old pit mix who is in bad shape. We lost our pomeranian almost 2 months ago and our pit mix female hasn’t been the same, he was her baby. She started getting wobbly in her rear legs then a few days later lost all balance and then it went to all four legs. Sweetpea hasn’t been able to stand up on her own for almost a week now and refuses to drink water. She has an appetite but has no desire to drink, I have added a teaspoon of chicken broth to her water to see if she would drink and she still won’t. We are poor folk who can’t afford a $1000+ vet bill and I am just wondering if you have any suggestions. We think it might be numerological but have no way of knowing for sure. I have had to bury 3 dogs in the past 2 months and dont want to bury another. Our last dog a yellow lab was shot in our driveway and were still heartbroken.

  • Yep, ya needed a smaller spoon… 🤪 You are so funny🤣🤣 So would the witch hazel mixture be a good thing to start using after you got rid of the fleas ? My dog/ yard doesn’t usually have fleas but when i get a stray dog come running through the yard and start doing his thing.ss. Then i start having problems !!

  • I love your articles! I have found some helpful information about natural food and remedies for pet problems. I have a dog, a greater swiss mountain dog, that’s almost 12 years old, and I have 3 cats, too. You have to treat different things in different ways between the two species. So thank you for your articles for helping both dogs and cats. I do have one little problem with one of the articles though. One of them you orally gave one of your dogs some garlic as part of a regimen to treat for worms and pests, and I thought garlic was toxic to both dogs and cats, causing their kidneys and other organs to stop functioning. Is that true or not? I was confused a bit, because you are a vet giving a dog garlic. Please comment. BTW, I would love to have a copy of your book. [email protected]

  • FYI, DE will kill fleas in your carpets really well, but in my experience, is has a corrosive action against some (maybe all) metals, so be careful applying it around metal table legs, computers sitting in the floor, etc. It works better if you leave it in the carpet for a while so the fleas can’t escape it, but you don’t want it in contact with metal for that long.

  • While on the subject of less toxic forms of insect control, cinnamon powder sprinkled on crevice or against walls where pets can’t walk on and lick their paws can help repel many types of ants. Bromalain, an enzyme made from pineapple, digests protein and basically melts soft bodied parasites such as round worms and tape worms in both pets and humans. Open a capsule and pour into a feeding syringe with a little water to mix well, follow with more water to wash it down, given to both cats and dogs once per day for two to three days consecutively. Repeat again in three weeks to capture the newly hatched parasites. Humans take 2 or 3 capsules each time. Pure papaine powder made from papaya works better but is more difficult to find and much more expensive. Don’t use the ones intend for meat tenderizer as they contain lots of added salt and is very dilute in concentration. The brand I use is Starwest brand and comes in one pound size. Does contain quite a bit of maltodextrin though, which I don’t like. These enzymes are also good at wound debridement (I think that is the word I’m looking for, but not positive). When given orally, can help body clear faster of pus or swollen wounds. I also encourage pet owners to keep on hand food grade activated charcoal powder or capsules. Taken orally to help many stomach ailments, food poisoning, ingestion of toxic substances, bee or wasp stings (Make a pultice paste by adding a few drops of water to the powder and apply to sting, will reduce pain to a much more manageable level within one minute).

  • Used DE, but melted coconut oil works amazingly. Fleas went jumping. When we would remove the oil, wash with flea shampoo. Another great idea is Dawn. .. All remedies work. Choose what fits your time and needs. I deflea my house as well. Black flag Flea and tick. $15.00 Home Depot. Go online and research that

  • Quite a while ago we had problems with fleas on our cats and they got into our home. At the time I was already using diatomaceous earth in my garden and read it was also good to worm cats and kittens and since it was working well in my garden on insects I tried it on the cats and sprinkled around inside my home on the carpet and next to the walls and floors. within a week or so we were flea free, but I continued so as to kill emergeing fleas from eggs. have not had any fleas since and yep we still use it for things around our home and I do take a tsp of it in water once or twice a week for myself. I love your articles.

  • I have a long haired cat.. a few years ago I took her to the vet because she was having potty issues.. he did surgery.. pulled a ROCK out of her intestines caused from the Diatomaceous earth. If your cat might possibly have the tiniest hairball.. do not use this on them.. it will harden into a rock inside their body.

  • Another way to get fleas out of your house is to use dish soap and a small lamp put it on the floor turn it on and put the cereal bowl with some water and the dish soap under the light it will attract the fleas at night or in a dark room and they land in the soapy water and cannot get out it kills them. We have been doing this for years when needed.

  • I did an experiment some years ago. Caught 2 fleas and put one in a glass with diatomaceous earth and the other in a glass with salt. It took only 20 minutes for the one in diatomaceous earth to die. The one in the salt did not die until I transferred it to the other glass and in 20 minutes time it was also dead.

  • Sunshine is still my favorite. UV C light kills eggs and larvae in 30 seconds. The Sun coming through our atmosphere is only mostly UV A light and some UV B so it takes a little longer to kill eggs and larvae, but it still works. (It really works!) So sun those pet beds and covers regularly. The diatomaceous is nasty in the eyes and lungs so I tried to avoid using it except in deep cracks or places where dust won’t be an issue.

  • Those people that find fault with everything have suggested that it dries out your pet’s skin. I feel like the fleas would do more damage than the Diatomaceous Earth would. I have also found that it takes care of other insects as well. A couple of years ago I had neighbors move into my apartment complex and the brought roaches with them. I found 2 of them in my apartment and I had been there for 4 years already and had never seen any. I put DE all over the carpet and around the baseboards and never found another roach in my space again.

  • Thank you so much for promoting a nontoxic flea control. I do not trust putting a chemical on my animal that I can’t let touch my skin. Most of the name brand flea controls that are recommended at Veterinary Offices are made of total toxic organics and I believe should never be put on our animals. Even my animals have made it clear they do not want that stuff on them. If they don’t cause harm immediately, which in some cases they do, there are long term problems that can be developed over time. Thank you for putting the animals first!

  • I’ve used food grade diatomaceous earth for years for flea control AND WORMING. Farmers use it for that purpose! It works! You dissolve it in water, give to your dog thru a syringe in the SiDE POCKET of the mouth give for two weeks, wait 2 weeks, then two more weeks to kill newly hatched worms. There are Youtubes about this. Killed roundworms in my Maltese. Also works for people who get worms!

  • BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS STUFF. It is dangerous if you don’t handle it carefully. ALWAYS WEAR A MASK when using diatomaceous earth. The particles are like shards of glass – when looked at under a microscope, you see how sharp the edges are. When inhaled, it will make microscopic cuts in the lungs. It can very easily cause a person to develop pneumonia… It is a dessicant, which means it absorbs moisture… therefore, once inhaled, it becomes like a thick sludge in the lungs… This is NOT a safe method -for either of them!!! 😡 I nearly ended up in the hospital last week after inhaling it… doing just what he is doing in this article. I coughed and coughed and coughed… could barely breathe for several days…. coughed up horrible amounts of thick mucous. Thankfully I have been able to clear my lungs without having to seek medical attention, but many people are not so lucky. I do not know who this vet is… but he is definitely NOT a responsible pet owner or caregiver. This is VERY BAD ADVICE.

  • Just came across this article and I would caution vacuuming of the stuff up with the vacuum cleaner. I did that once in the vacuum cleaner I was using was a really expensive Dyson one that I had borrowed and the vacuum cleaner never worked again after that. I still feel guilty about that to this day. So just be careful when vacuuming, I think if you can find another way of dealing with removing it, I would. I don’t think I would trust vacuuming it up again.

  • I just sprinkled 3 big jars of salt all over my rugs and everything. About to order diatomaceous earth food grade. This infestation is disgusting. Never had fleas where I live until the new landlord about this place and we never see anyone spraying for flea on the grass anymore, for the first time In 7 years we have fleas smh. Thank you I have given them flea baths, gave them flea pills and used Frontline plus and vacuum 3 times a day wash everything in Hot water etc I’m exhausted trying to fight these monsters

  • I use DE on my pack of dogs. Chewy.com sells a DE soap for baths. I send it to my mom and kids for their dogs. I live in the desert. When I lived in the city fleas were a problem. Out here in the desert I have no problems with fleas or ticks. I use food grade DE outside, on my dogs, I feed it to them three times a month for pest control, and during kissing bug/blood sucker season I spread it heavily under their crates to prevent the kissing bugs from getting on my dogs. This was the first year I used it to deter kissing bugs and it seemed to work well. I still had to clean out from under their crates every three days and kill any kissing bugs still alive. Chewy sells a 10 pound bag for $20 (in the US). My neighbors have fleas and ticks. When their dogs make it to my house I de-tick them and dust them heavily in DE. Then I re-dust my yard and the dog crates I have outside (it is 3 miles to my nearest neighbor, but their dogs will wander looking for food and water. I keep water available outside for my pack and any wandering cows. I also keep a couple crates outside with bedding inside to protect any wanderer who might need to rest). My furbies are inside dogs, but I still lightly dust their crates and bedding. Your website is a treasure. Thank you!

  • I use a pair of dishwashing gloves when applying it to my kittens as it’s a dessicant. Have a good hand cream available afterward. D.E. cuts fleas and bedbugs from the inside out. Try using a small funnel to get the d.e. into a jar. Does anyone wash their pets at some point after so many days of application? My concern is dehydration when they lick themselves.

  • Maybe you have a article already, but if not it would be great to warn people about using flea medicine for dogs, while having cats as well. It’s extremely dangerous. I’d advise people to not use it at all. This is the best choice. I’ve been using vinegar on my puppies to get rid of fleas. As soon as I find this product I’ll start using it.

  • vitamin B also will repel mosquitos along with spraying your dog with avon’s skin so soft is a great alternative to protect your dog from mosquitos therefore protecting them from heartworms and ur not feeding them chemicals that arent tested by the FDA. I had 1 of my dogs on ❤guard monthly and she still got heartworms. Because of her age we was were advised not to proceed with treatment to remove them.

  • I will actually use baking soda from the grocery store instead of from the 50 lb bag. I wonder if sodium carbonate ( not bi carb, aka pH increaser, soda ash, super washing powder from Arm & Hammer ) would work on carpets with the salt. I wouldn’t put it on my kitty because it is more gritty than sodium bicarbonate AKA baking soda.

  • I threw the DE everywhere,, I was so desperate to be rid of the fleas that 4 months ago set up residence in my bedroom where my pets sleep. I slept on the stuff as I threw it on my duvet top. I woke up next morning literally in so much pain, my hands were swollen and my body was so dehydrated I could barely move. I washed it off my dog and cat immediately. In saying that, it was the one thing that put a massive dent into this flea infestation I found myself in. Now I have that stuff sprinkled into the carpet edges only. And the places I find hard to vacuum frequently like under my bed mattresses and bed frame. It works !! But what a mess 😆 Thanks for your article
