How To Make My French Bulldog Stop Eating Poo

Expert’s answer:

To make your French Bulldog stop eating poop, there are several strategies you can try:

  1. Keep the environment clean: Make sure to promptly clean up your dog’s poop from the yard or litter box. This will reduce the opportunity for your French Bulldog to engage in this behavior.
  2. Dietary changes: Ensure that your French Bulldog is receiving a balanced and nutritious diet. Sometimes, nutritional deficiencies can lead to coprophagia (the medical term for poop eating). Consult with your veterinarian to ensure your dog’s diet is appropriate for their needs.
  3. Additives to discourage poop eating: Some additives can be added to your dog’s food to make their poop taste unpleasant. For example, you can try adding a few tablespoons of canned pumpkin to their food, as the taste of pumpkin is appealing in food but disgusting in dog poop. Another option is to add meat tenderizer to their food, which will make the poop taste bad.
  4. Training and redirection: Train your French Bulldog to respond to commands such as “leave it” or “drop it.” When you catch them attempting to eat poop, use these commands to redirect their attention to a more appropriate behavior or reward them for leaving the poop alone.
  5. Increase exercise and mental stimulation: A bored dog is more likely to engage in undesirable behaviors, including poop eating. Ensure your French Bulldog gets plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation through activities such as walks, playtime, and puzzle toys.
  6. Consult with a veterinarian or animal behaviorist: If the behavior persists or is causing concern, it may be beneficial to seek professional advice. A veterinarian or animal behaviorist can provide personalized guidance and recommendations based on your dog’s specific needs and circumstances.

Remember, consistency and patience are key when trying to modify your dog’s behavior. It may take time for your French Bulldog to break the habit of eating poop, but with the right approach and persistence, it is possible to overcome this behavior.

  • I have 2 puppies I got in Jan 2021 – Maggie has eaten her poop since day one and within 10 days of having her she aspirated her poop and ended up with e.coli in her lungs and almost died. 6 days in the hospital and 3 more weeks of antibiotics seemed to fix it. 4 week later she was coughing lethargic congested and had the same thing UGH! 8 more days in the hospital 3 more weeks of antibiotics later she seemed better but still can’t watch her 24/7 so she eats her poop at least twice a week and its frustrating. Ive tried pumpkin, pineapple, Copraban (from vet) Well & Good Coprophagia from pet smart, For-bid (from vet), Furrolandia NO POO treats, and none of them worked. Now my other puppy has started to also eat her poop What The HECK! They eat ACANA and Stella and Chewy’s so good quality food…. I am at a loss.

  • Update…. So far since last fall I’ve tried 4 poop deterrents one was Forbid recommended by my vet another called Bad Habit, two others I cannot recall. I’ve also tried Accent sprinkled on his food, pumpkin, pineapple. My vet said don’t bother with the hot sauce on his poop, just pick it up right after because he is very motivated and will probably be tempted anyway. I remember how I use the ecollar occasionally for when company comes over and thought maybe it will help…. Yep this works!! Once he poops, I praise him, tell him to leave it, Come! I do not even need to touch the button, it’s enough to just have it on him. Once he comes to me I give him a treat. If he doesn’t have his ecollar on he doesn’t always listen. So for now when I know it’s poop time the ecollar gets put on for five minutes, it is what it is 😊

  • My dogs have access to their outside bathroom area 24/7 so it’s hard to know when they poop. I do my best to always check the area and pick up right away but I still can tell that she eats it. I’ve been trying a lot of methods and I don’t want to make them not have access to their bathroom whenever either. So I’ve just been more cautious and clean their teeth frequently.

  • My dog is on a good food and there is nothing wrong medically…but she still eats her poop. We also feed her exactly the amount she is suppose to get. She is an EXTREMELY food focused dog. She is potty trained, she goes outside so she doesn’t get scolded when she goes etc. She ONLY does it when she’s outside and we aren’t around her. She won’t do it if we’re perusal. We try playing with her, but she’s very very lazy. She’s about 10 so she’s getting older and just sleeps most of the time. I would love to hear your recommendations/advice.

  • The treat reinforcement thing worked at first. After he went poo and he didn’t eat the nasty stuff, he was rewarded with a treat. Then one day outside a neighbor made a weird comment on how big my dog had gotten, so I’m thinking must be all those treats I’m giving him its adding up. Geez now my 🐶 dog is back in rehab lol.

  • My puppy stared eating our cats poop 💩 And we put the litter box up higher Next thing I know is he’s eating his own poop I’ve been going crazy Come to find out the woman who said she had him up to date on shots and deworming But when she gave him to the transport people Accidentally forgotten to give them his records Well she now not only mailed them 1 time But we didn’t get them So we are waiting again for them Never got them She must have lied And our new puppy has worms So that’s the problem Now he goes for a very expensive vet trip for everything he need Just a couple weeks before Christmas 🎄 So no one will be getting a gift from us this year 😢

  • we give our dogs “grain free” dry food with sweet potato or pumpkin added but main ingredient is chicken. i am not going to get up and pick up poop each time our 3 dogs poop on the puppy pads !! only 1 dog does this nasty habit, so bad, that i caught her trying to PULL THE POOP out of the other dogs butt while it was just coming out of the rectum !! thats gone way too far. all the yelling doesnt stop the poop relocator!! she is quite the heavyweight now for a young adult dog. we even give the dogs table meats as well. only 1 dog has this habit. however, if 1 poop should happen to slip past her and it dries out, she usually isnt interested !

  • My dog is fat, she eats 2x per day and she still eats exclusively human poop. Some bums poop in the park in front of our house so if i let my dog unsupervised for 1min she’ll go eat poop directly. I tried telling her no, yelling at her and even hitting her with my flip-flops but she still does it and it breaks my heart to see her afraid of me after she eats poop. Even if I haven’t seen her or smelled the bad odor, she moves so guilty I know immediately that she ate poop. Dogs are bad liars.
