What dog breeds make up the Rottweiler?

Bred in Germany in the 1st century, Rottweilers are descended from German Shepherds crossed with the drover dogs and Mastiffs brought there by Roman soldiers. They were used for herding and guarding cattle, and later for pulling carts and wagons. By the 19th century, they were no longer needed for these jobs, and almost became extinct. Due to various groups, their numbers have risen, and they now enjoy popularity as family and service dogs in many countries. They have a sweet and loyal nature that helped them gain the reputation as excellent companions, while their territorial instincts make them wonderful guard dogs. They do need good socialization and obedience training, or else their dominant tendencies may get out of hand.

Which Rottweiler breed is strongest?

The American Rottweiler is a muscular and powerful large-sized breed. They are always black with clearly defined rust-colored markings. Male Rotties are generally bigger than females and have larger bone structures and broader frames. While females are smaller, they are still muscular and strong.

Americans dock Rottweilers’ tails, and their fur is medium in length with coarse, straight hair. They have an undercoat that can only be seen on their neck and thighs. In addition, this breed is a moderate shedder throughout the year.

The Roman Rottweiler is also referred to as the Colossal or Gladiator Rottweiler. However, this is a subtype of Rottie due to bad breeding. And the name Roman is misleading because the modern Rottie originated in Germany. Surprisingly these dogs were actually more mastiff-like and no longer exist. Furthermore, they were used by the Romans as herding dogs.

What AKC group is the Rottweiler in?

The Rottweiler’s ancestors were the drover’s dogs accompanying the herds the Romans brought with them when invading Europe. The controllable herding and guarding instincts were recognized by the Germans, and dogs were selectively bred for these traits. As need for its services diminished, the Rottweiler almost fell into extinction. In the early 1900s, a newly formed club established a breed standard. The breed has not appreciably changed since that time.

The ideal Rottweiler is a medium large, robust and powerful dog, black with clearly defined rust markings. His compact and substantial build denotes great strength, agility and endurance. Dogs are characteristically more massive throughout with larger frame and heavier bone than bitches. Bitches are distinctly feminine, but without weakness of substance or structure.

Size, Proportion, Substance – Dogs24 inches to 27 inches. Bitches22 inches to 25 inches, with preferred size being mid-range of each sex. Correct proportion is of primary importance, as long as size is within the standard’s range. The length of body, from prosternum to the rearmost projection of the rump, is slightly longer than the height of the dog at the withers, the most desirable proportion of the height to length being 9 to 10. The Rottweiler is neither coarse nor shelly. Depth of chest is approximately fifty percent (50 percent) of the height of the dog. His bone and muscle mass must be sufficient to balance his frame, giving a compact and very powerful appearance. Serious FaultsLack of proportion, undersized, oversized, reversal of sex characteristics (bitchy dogs, doggy bitches).

  • The Dobbie came in 2nd right? Love the Dob!!! Sleek and fit. I highly like the Rotti, but bcuz Dobs are the more agile a nd athletic between the 2 (at least by look), I tend to lean towards the Dob. I know Rots can be more powerful, but it ain’t just about their bite. Dobs also have that look, esp after ears are cropped and tails docked (still look rather mean with tails).

  • When half the breeds out there purposefully run away from their owners (not much loyalty) and are difficult to train, Rottweilers should automatically be winning these shows by the 50% margin alone. My Rottweiler only had to be shown 2 or 3 times what I expected of him and that was it. Other breeds? Good luck!!
