Hyperactive German Shepherd Puppies

Expert’s answer:

German Shepherd puppies are often described as hyperactive due to their high energy levels and natural instincts as herding dogs. Here are some key points to understand about hyperactive German Shepherd puppies:

1. Breed Characteristics: German Shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and energy. They were originally bred for herding and working purposes, which required them to be active and alert. As a result, they have a natural tendency to be energetic and may exhibit hyperactive behavior if not properly exercised and stimulated.

2. Lack of Exercise: One of the main reasons German Shepherd puppies can become hyperactive is due to a lack of physical exercise. These dogs have a lot of energy that needs to be burned off through activities such as walks, runs, playtime, and training sessions. Without adequate exercise, they may become restless and exhibit hyperactive behavior.

3. Mental Stimulation: In addition to physical exercise, German Shepherd puppies also require mental stimulation to keep them engaged and prevent hyperactivity. These intelligent dogs thrive on mental challenges, such as puzzle toys, obedience training, and interactive games. Providing them with mental stimulation can help redirect their energy and prevent hyperactive behavior.

4. Socialization and Training: Proper socialization and training are essential for German Shepherd puppies to learn how to behave appropriately and manage their energy levels. Early socialization with other dogs, people, and different environments can help them become well-rounded and less prone to hyperactivity. Consistent and positive training methods can also teach them self-control and appropriate behaviors.

5. Age and Development: It’s important to remember that hyperactivity is often more pronounced in puppies, as they are still developing and learning to control their energy. As they mature and receive proper training and exercise, their hyperactive behavior may naturally decrease over time. However, it’s important to establish good habits and routines early on to help manage their energy levels effectively.

6. Health Considerations: While hyperactivity is common in German Shepherd puppies, it’s always a good idea to rule out any underlying health issues that may contribute to excessive energy levels. If you have concerns about your puppy’s behavior, it’s best to consult with a veterinarian to ensure there are no underlying medical conditions causing the hyperactivity.

Remember, every German Shepherd puppy is unique, and their energy levels can vary. It’s important to provide them with the appropriate physical exercise, mental stimulation, and training to help manage their energy and prevent excessive hyperactivity. With proper care and attention, you can help your German Shepherd puppy grow into a well-behaved and balanced adult dog.

German Shepherd puppies are they energetic?

A lively breed, German shepherd dogs. If you share a home with one, you understand what we mean. They have a lot of brain power and are high energy as working dogs. They are undoubtedly a breed that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

You might be surprised to learn that, as long as they’re in good physical shape, they will remain active until they’re 7 to 8 years old if you’re wondering when they start to slow down. And even then, they continue to enjoy playing and having fun well into their senior years as long as they have the capacity.

German shepherds have a ton of stamina because they were bred to work all day. They have a lot of energy to burn because they were made to herd and protect livestock. You must help your pet release their stored energy because they most likely don’t have a real job.

German shepherd dogs enjoy using their noses to explore, hike, and walk. They use their senses in new ways when they are in unfamiliar surroundings, using their nose to detect new scents, their eyes to see new things, and their ears to hear new sounds. They will become exhausted as a result of this stimulation, which is also amusing.

These walks require a little planning because you’ll probably need to drive to your walking destination, but once you arrive, you and your dog will not only get some exercise but it will also help strengthen your bond because you and your dog will be doing something new and have something to look forward to together.

Will my overexcited puppy ever settle down?

The myth that “they will grow out of it” is untrue. There’s a myth that puppy energy will wane with age. Although some puppies do calm down as they get older, excessive excitement isn’t typical puppy energy and can persist even in adult dogs. Understanding when and what triggers overexcitement is crucial for dealing with it before it spirals out of control.

Do give your puppy a way to relax. One of the best ways to control excessive excitement in a puppy is to channel their enthusiasm toward a fun activity or toy. To keep your puppy active, structured games like fetch and access to puzzles and toys that are mentally stimulating are both very helpful.

Do honor restrained conduct. Give your dog plenty of time to unwind and settle before rewarding them with affection, soothing rubs, or a special chew toy that will help them maintain their composure. They will learn about appropriate behavior more quickly if you reward them at the appropriate time and in the appropriate manner.

  • We were so confused when our GSD CeCe appeared to be regressing this spring. She was in the 7,8,9 months age and she was doing bad dog things that she hadnt done since we first got her. She even urinated in the house once, right in front of us! But with consistency and strong leadership she is back on track to being a GREAT dog with excellent listening skills. Thanks German Shepherd Man for all your articles, they have truly helped us 🙂

  • I want my puppy WonderGirl to be trained like Major. Wow what a well behaved GSD she would be. I’m really working on her. Has a ways to go. Only 4 months. Your training system is so inspiring. It really does work. Love perusal your dogs go through it all. Your articles are so very inspiring. Thank you so much.

  • Thank you. Loved this info. Brody is now 8 months old, so he is right in that spot. I have been being more of a leader now with making him do what I tell him to, us going in and out of doors and him second. I’ve heard that you should always do that, pack leader ya know. Love all your valuable information. 👍

  • In other words, u websiteed your “inner Brooklyn “, when Major went off the path!! Lol. I find another technique helpful as well. I assert myself VERY STRONGLY change my body language to that of a soldier and start to back dog into a corner, until they can’t go any farther and I stand almost right on top of them. Stay that way for a few seconds with my hand up and and right in front of dogs face. It’s a game changer, try it. They know when that hands comes up and out, I mean business!!!

  • I like drop over release. Easier to say but changing at this stage would only cause confusion. I’ve found that about 12-14 months they go through adolescence for lack of another word. Males seem to get the team spirit and work fervently. Females on the other hand act like they are doing you a favor about half the time. Females can be outstanding and excel in any job, but only if they feel like it at this minute. By the time they get about 15-16 months, then the work ethic switches back (with occasional episodes). Of course not all personalities are the same and dogs have minds of their own and your patience time is one of the first tools you need for training. But I do believe the old adage ” If you treat a dog like a person, they will treat you like a dog.”

  • My boy went through that and would be jumping on me over excited when I was in the yard with him. I grab his collar and hold him so he can’t jump on me, and until he settles down. Then I would brush him and take him walking. They need plenty of excerise on leash and off leash. He is 4 and try’s to do it sometimes but is much better. Stay consistent. They are too smart!

  • Here’s one for you. My 11month old is VERY ball driven. Drops when asked ect. She just started this thing where she shoves the big ball into you, and pushes it onto my feet. She’s gonna kill me. Cuz I’m trying to walk. What the world can I do to make her stop? She used to just carry the ball around and follow me like a good girl. I realize she wants me to kick or throw it. But I can’t always do that. HALP! Lol
