Getting My German Shepherd To Eat

Expert’s answer:

If you’re having trouble getting your German Shepherd to eat, there could be several reasons behind it. Here are some possible explanations and tips to help encourage your German Shepherd to eat:

Picky Eater:

German Shepherds can be picky eaters, especially if they are used to getting treats or table scraps as snacks. If you give treats just to entice your dog to eat, it can turn them into a fussy eater. To address this, it’s important to establish a consistent feeding routine and avoid giving them extra treats or human food. Stick to a high-quality complete dog food and avoid constantly changing their diet.

Stress or Anxiety:

If your German Shepherd spends long periods alone at home or if something has changed in their environment causing stress, it can reduce their appetite. Separation anxiety can also be a factor. To address this, try to minimize stressors in their environment, provide mental and physical stimulation, and consider behavioral training or consulting with a professional if necessary.

Food Boredom:

Dogs can get tired of eating the same food every day, leading to a loss of appetite. Consider rotating different flavors or brands of high-quality dog food to keep mealtime interesting for your German Shepherd. However, make sure to transition to new food gradually to avoid digestive issues.

Health Issues:

If your German Shepherd’s lack of appetite persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it’s important to consult with a veterinarian. There could be underlying health issues such as dental problems, gastrointestinal issues, or food allergies that need to be addressed.

Feeding Schedule and Portions:

Ensure you’re following a consistent feeding schedule and providing appropriate portions for your German Shepherd. Overfeeding or underfeeding can impact their appetite. If you’re unsure about the correct portion size, consult your veterinarian for guidance.

Feeding Environment:

Create a calm and comfortable feeding environment for your German Shepherd. Avoid distractions and loud noises during mealtime. Some dogs prefer eating in a quiet and secluded area.

Remember, every dog is unique, and it may take some trial and error to find the right approach that works for your German Shepherd. If the issue persists or worsens, consulting with a veterinarian is always recommended.

If my German shepherd hasn’t eaten in two days, what should I do?

Dogs have, in fact, been known to go much longer without food, but there is a high risk of either their organs or tissues suffering irreparable harm or even dying. Make an appointment for a checkup with your veterinarian if your dog hasn’t consumed any food for more than two days. It’s best not to wait at all if they appear ill because they could get worse.

A healthy dog can go without water for about three days, but going longer than 24 hours could result in organ damage that cannot be repaired.

Dogs can go longer than they can go without water before they start to starve. A dog will quickly dehydrate if given no access to water to drink. A healthy dog can go without water for about three days, but more than 24 hours will make them feel terrible and could cause organ damage that cannot be repaired. Therefore, if your dog goes for 24 hours without drinking, it’s crucial to call your vet office. In order to diagnose the issue and provide your dog with the necessary care, the vet will examine your dog and may request tests.

Due to their high intelligence and sensitive nature, German Shepherds can stop eating due to stressors like separation anxiety or something as simple as a change in routine or environment. However, if your dog’s routine eating habits change in any way, you should always consult your veterinarian because this could be a sign that your dog has a health issue that needs to be addressed.

What foods pique a dog’s interest?

One of the simplest (and least expensive) strategies to try is to tempt a picky dog who is ill, disabled, or elderly to eat rotisserie chicken. Everyone can agree that when they walk by rotisserie chicken in a grocery store, they enjoy the aroma even more than humans do. If you add some white meat from a rotisserie chicken, even the pickiest eater will frequently gobble up his food. Dogs should only be fed the white meat portions of a rotisserie chicken if they are to follow a low-fat diet. Do not give them the bones or skin. Hand-feeding and warming up the food in the microwave are two additional simple methods to try to increase appetite.

Acupuncture is known to lessen pain, inflammation, and nausea, despite the fact that it cannot treat a condition. Dogs with decreased appetites brought on by medical conditions like diabetes, kidney or liver failure, pancreatic inflammation, or hormonal conditions like Addison’s disease are known to benefit from acupuncture treatments and experience an increase in appetite.

It is time for pharmaceutical intervention when all other options have failed. Dogs with decreased appetites brought on by other illnesses that make them nauseous, such as kidney disease or cancer, or medications like chemotherapy frequently receive the prescription drug mirtazapine. Given that mirtazapine affects the central nervous system and elevates serotonin levels, it is crucial that dogs taking SSRIs (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors) do not receive it.

Why has my dog eaten so little the past three days?

Even though a dog’s lack of appetite isn’t always a sign of a serious condition, it’s still important to get them to the vet right away because it could be a sign of something more serious, like cancer, various systemic infections, pain, liver issues, or kidney failure.

It can be very upsetting when your dog won’t eat, regardless of how long you’ve kept dogs as pets or whether you’ve just adopted your first puppy. Dogs losing their appetite can happen for a number of different reasons. To create the most effective treatment strategy, it is critical to identify the cause.

The first consideration is your method for determining your dog’s appetite. If you’re worried that your dog isn’t eating as much as the recommendations on the food you buy, keep in mind that these are just averages. Many perfectly healthy dogs consume only 60 to 70 percent of the recommended serving size.

It’s crucial to seek veterinary care if you notice changes in your dog’s eating habits since loss of appetite in dogs can be a sign of illness. When a dog who usually eats well refuses to eat, it is crucial to act quickly.

When should I be concerned if my dog isn’t eating?

A dog may not want to eat for a variety of reasons. First of all, it’s important to note that loss of appetite is one of the most common symptoms of illness. If your dog hasn’t eaten in 24 hours, it’s best to call your veterinarian, especially if there are any additional alarming symptoms like diarrhea or lethargy. Remember, you can reach Small Door vets via the app whenever you want.

Appetite loss is frequently a symptom of dental problems. Check your dog’s mouth for any objects lodged in their teeth or gums because, similar to toothache in humans, your dog may not feel like eating if something is wrong with their teeth.

A bad odor, any loose teeth, or significant tartar buildup are all indications of a larger dental issue; if you notice any of these, make sure to get your pet to the vet right away.

  • Jade – devours every piece of raw meat and lays her head on the table waiting for the slow pokes to get done. Jasper – isnt too sure at first but digs right in savoring every bite until its all gone and occasionally tries to steal little brothers from him. Jet – isnt quite sure about anything put in front of him. has that look of disgust on his face, but proceeds to try each piece very slowly! jasper watches little brother try to eat each piece of raw meat daintily, but you can tell he is NOT fully enjoying it! tells mom and dad to cook this crap first before feeding it to me! LOL! LOVE THIS!!!!

  • Amazing dogs! Just a tip: as much as you can, avoid giving dogs raw chickens bones. When they crack they brake into very sharp pieces that lots of times will cause internal bleeding. Happened to my GS multiple times and I’ve seen it happen to other dogs as well. If you take a raw chicken bone and crack it with a hammer you’ll see it. Anyways, great article 👍

  • I have a GS that will be 12 months old in a few weeks and Jet reminds me of him so much. His name is Zero and he is very good with food, a fussy eater but what he does eat he is always very careful and cautious with it. Loves to lick his food a million times before actually eating it as well. It is amazing having a shepherd. It’s a very different experience to most other dogs I have ever had. Now I think I will never have any other breed. They are amazing.

  • First dog he likes his food cooked and maybe even seasoned. Third dog is a beast. You couldn’t trust any food left alone in front of her. Second dog is like a mixture of both but leaning more towards the Third dog. Don’t leave your food unsupervised in front of him either. This was interesting and kind of funny to watch.

  • I really love your dogs. Together, they are truly lovable. I’ve always wanted a German Shepherd but for some reason end up with bulldogs. As soon as i move into a new place in about 3 months, i will get a Shepard but maybe two after seeing how the companship along side another dog seems to help them. Very good article!

  • I get the feeling Jet might be a little like one of my dogs and not like chewing on frozen foods unless it’s a bone. If I try to give my big boy a frozen chicken neck or ear he’ll take it to the garden and diligently watch it until it’s soft/warm enough for chewing! My other dog is more like Jade, “food, I didn’t get any? clearly starbin now”

  • Jade is amazing, she ate all she was given just about,in a matter of seconds !, I just love the bored look on her face as she waits, chin on table, for the other two amateurs to finish !.Was that all filmed in real time ?, if so I doubt if they were hungry again for ages .Good exercise for their jaw muscles and digestion !.Good job Jade was not next to Jet, there may of been some help given . Great article unless you are a vegetarian !.

  • I’ve had dogs for 19 years and I have always read and also been told many times never to give them chicken that still has bones in it because the bones can splinter and cause damage to their organs and they can also choke from it. The dog on the right pretty much swallowed the entire drumstick. Scary!

  • Thought you weren’t supposed to give dogs pork. I could be wrong. My gsd was out in the snow one night while I shoveled some areas and was crunching away on what I thought was ice. Finally shined a flashlight over to see what was left of a giant rabbit she must have caught earlier in the fenced yard. Was amazed at what she consumed. Bones and all

  • I have four female German Shepherd’s two of them are one year old and the other two are three years old. I feed them Victor dry dog food especially engineered for German shepherds and then I mix it with healthy by design canned. Both of them are grain free and then I follow up with a Nutra that glucosamine and can Drayton peanut butter biscuit, and then I give them their Nutra vet supplements which are called all in one and the other is cranberry and the other is pre-and probiotics the one today and they are in perfect health. I wish I can afford the raw meat diet but beside that, I feed them the next best thing I love you German, shepherds that are absolutely beautiful, what are their names? The names of mine or JAZZ, Starr, Freedom, and Navy….

  • I love your articles and I have a GSD too. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer here as I like to feed raw. My vet told me that raw pork chops are not a good choice as they could have a parasite trichinella spiralis larvae, which can cause a parasite infection known as trichinosis. They were not too keen on the mackeral and I do not blame them. lol Howevcer, Spanish Mackeral or King Mackeral are very good. Youe pups coats look silky and very healthy.

  • My whole life I’m like Jade when i’m going to a All-you-can-eat restaurant with friends/family When they bring the food to our table i just eat it, while the others take a small bite, talk to each other, tiny bite again, and talk again…. I just smile to them but i’m like just eat the food so they can prepare round 2 for us.. You can talk in the waiting time between rounds And when they ask me why i don’t talk a lot and i tell them that i can’t talk when i have food in my mouth, they look at me like i’m speaking chinese.. 🤔

  • Let’s face it… #Jett would NEVER make it as an outdoor survivalist! 😏 He’s so used to ground up goodies in his bowl, that he doesn’t seem to care for whole pieces of raw meat. Jett: “Pardon me cow, but can you grind thyself up, and place thy meat in my food dish, therefore, allowing me to consume you?” 🤨🤣 Jasper: “I’ll eat your share!” 😃 Jade: “Karen, is it too late to get rid of the new kids?” 🤔😒🙄 Karen puts mackerel down: All three… “AWWWWWW.. #HELLNO!!!!” 🤭🤢 (Not realizing it WILL be in their food bowls, later…) 🤫 🤣🤣

  • Please help: I’ve seen bad health problems ever since he became a pup and gave him dry food. Is this actually beneficial if I give him raw food like this? After all, it is what they used to eat! They are animals after all!!! 😂 I think my German shepherd would see major health changes if I switch his diet to something more fresh…

  • The guy on the right is a grinder. The guy in the middle – eats and enjoys it, especially when something else gets to him from the neighbors on the table. The lady on the left needs to cut everything, but she especially loves the chicken. She doesn’t need to cut the chicken … There is a saying: whoever eats, he works like that. I wonder if it fits these dogs? It seems to me that the lady is tough at work. The guy on the right does whatever it takes. The guy in the middle needs to explain a little longer what is required of him. But with him you can try something new in your work and with success!

  • Vets and other professionals do not recommend raw meat given to dogs. They can get same food borne illness’s as humans and transfers to humans. Also not sure why people have forgotten the old rule passed down from way back that giving raw meat – the taste of blood can make your dog more likely to bite. Once they get that taste they will want it. Dogs have been domesticated over thousands of years so they evolved to what we have today. Just as we have and if we ate raw meat we’d be sick too.

  • I’m having questions Is it a must to give dogs raw meat? I never fed my dog raw meat because I was afraid how he would react to me after. I might give him a Lil peace, but not bones bc he’s 12 now and some of his teeth are broken (not bc of age, bc of an accident) I don’t want to risk it… But he’s forgunatelly healthy…. I guess we’re fine 🤗✨

  • All the uneducated people having tantrums in the comments are downright hilarious lmao Raw meaty bones are perfectly safe if they are fully raw and sized appropriately for the dogs size. On the otherhand cooked bones are deadly. I’ve met and interviewed hundreds of people who feed their dogs and cats raw and literally none of them have ever had any issue with raw bones or bacteria or nutritional deficiencies. I’ve asked dozens of vets questions regarding this and none of them have ever had any issues with any animals who were fed raw fresh foods, the only issues that ever showed up relating to bones were cooked bones eaten by dogs scavenging from the trash. And I asked mainly conventional vets at that, vets that don’t even encourage raw told me that they have never seen anything in their entire careers or schooling that would point to any issues with appropriate sized raw bones or raw meat, their main concerns were cleanliness and nutritional balance but all explained that all their raw fed patients were in excellent health. I was a bit shocked at this but it was eye opening. Needless to say I switched my cats to raw and their health has improved greatly. Backed by multiple vets and tests. They love raw chicken bones btw, natures perfect toothbrush lol

  • Giving dogs animal bones is highly risky especially if a piece gets caught then off to the vet with a expensive bill and possibly surgery or it could lead to something fatal. No I’m not a veterinarian but I have witnessed it and it’s scary and emotional so please be very careful and cautious if you are still doing this. Also even giving animals human food isn’t good for them either. If you don’t like what I say then you must not know what freedom of speech is as people ignore it and I’m NOT sorry for opening my mouth as I’m a animal lover.

  • I worked the rigs in the arctic in the 70’s. We had trouble with a polar bear so an eskimo with his dog sled was hired to do a two mile radius around the rig every day. One dog liked to come up to the doghouse and we soon learned he liked cookies. We would put one of each kind of the variety pack on the doghouse bench. He would only eat one kind and would wait for another of the same kind to be put down. Your middle shepherd reminded me of him.

  • How adorably mannerable they are – sitting still and patient. I have to laugh because they definitely have different tastes. The baby, well, he/she is a baby, so that’s understandable. But, the adult on the end almost never meet anything edible that’s not edible LOL. The middle fur baby is a picky eater. Is that the adult female? Beautiful canines, btw!

  • Soooo cuuuuute! I love how you guys gave them mostly safe foods and human food “treats” lol my dogs get cheese when we run out of treats and sometimes if needed we make some scrambled eggs and rice, mix it together and feed it to them when they’re out of dog food and we broke asf! XD they always act like they’re starving but in actuality they get three meals per day!

  • This article was adorable! Jade is like my lab. She eats everything, even if it is supposedly “healthy.” Jasper is like my shepherd. He sometimes tricks you and grabs a healthy food but spits it right out, having none of it. And little Jet is like my Jack Russell, sweet little face and eyes, and plays more with his food than eats it. ALL are precious! God bless them all. P.S. This is going in my Favorites!

  • I used to have 2 dogs. One of them LOVED carrots as a pup, she’d even steal them from the grocery bags when I got home, while completely ignoring ham, cheese, meat, etc. As a grown up she hated them, stared at me as if saying “do you think I’m a dog or what?” The other dog LOVED peanut butter, his eyes would almost pop out when he realized what he was about to eat. Both of them LOVED meat baby food and would chase the jars around the house until they were licked spotless.

  • Just like the little dog with the egg, I gave my dog a slice of an apple, he licked it, stared at it for a bit, but when he saw me take a bite out of my whole apple he realized “Oh, so it IS ok to eat, got it” and he just devoured it, then he came up to me again with this look that screamed “More please”

  • This is too funny! My shepherds LOVE their fruit and veggies! (Meat and cheese first of course. They aren’t heathens!) They will eat the asparagus right off the stock in our garden. Teddy LOVES beans. And Astrid will occasionally eat lettuce or spinach if I tell her she can’t get more until she finishes it….but maybe a few pieces tops!

  • My German shepherd liked all sorts of stuff, she’d steal tomatoes right out of our garden, we couldn’t Crack a stick of celery without her hearing it and come running same with green beans. She loved fruit of any sort, even citrus though we never gave her lemon. She really seemed to like pickles and sauerkraut. Eggs too. Even giving her medications was a breeze surprisingly, just had to out the smallest smear of peanut butter on em.

  • It’s interesting how some dogs, who are omnivores like us, will eat fruits and vegetables and some won’t. My last dog refused to eat anything from a plant, but he always wanted some when he saw me eating. If I threw him an orange section, etc, THE SECOND it touched his mouth, he would drop it! Then, Bandit would shoot me a look like, “You eat this? How? Why?” That look of astonishment was priceless.

  • Btw dog owners, I think I may have cured my dogs tapeworm issues by feeding my dogs the entire hard boil egg, just cracked, not shelled. I think the shells in their gut actually killed to tapes because they don’t have them anymore and that’s the only reason I can think of. I wouldn’t mind some additional input, and maybe some recognition if it actually works. Good luck folks, stay safe.

  • So funny. I’ve had shepherds all my life (and I’m 67) my current best friend came to me at the end of a rescued Pit’s life. “Jokerman” would eat anything; asparagus, lemons, tomatoes, onions, anything. So when he was alive, Loch’n did the same. Another joke a man is gone, Loch’n has developed his own tastes. Nothing but cheese and protein. These dogs are beautiful I’ve never seen coloring like this

  • Awwww Just perusal that makes me miss my boy Teg (named after the Bashar Miles Teg from books 5 & 6 of Frank Herbert’s Dune books) He was my (now 16 yo) son’s fuzzy brother when he was a toddler till Jr. High. They’re both eat about anything kind of guys. Makes me wonder if Will saw Teg eating like that and decided to be like that too? 🤔

  • Thank you for sharing your distinguished food panel preferences! Our GSDs have similar priorities. They were born at our home. Baron wanted only meat and anything dairy but was so gentle bringing a baby bird or bunny he had found for me to take care of. Soggy but not harmed. Sister Tessie politely eats her fruits and vegetables and meats and dairy. A single M&M candy stumps them both. Thank you for your beautiful article! 🖖🐾

  • Woah the dogs emotions are very incredible, these animals are very intelligent. The behavior is similar to humans, even though I am allergic to them biologically I still have love for the ART of the (MOST HIGH). Thanks for the article, there’s alot of intelligence with in dogs. They Sniff crime, many other factors in society they play.

  • First dog: omnivorous “Hoover hound” – earns seat by the high chair at all family dinners. Second dog: a gourmet with a sensitive pallet. Can be trusted around any food that’s not meat. Earns seat next to the vegetarian cousin. Puppy: eager to try anything, hasn’t quite gotten the hang of chewing non-kibble food, too darn cute – pass him around and let everyone say hi!
