Training A New Malamute Puppy

Expert’s answer:

Training a new Malamute puppy can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Malamutes are intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. Here are some tips to help you with training your new Malamute puppy:

Start Early and Be Consistent

It’s important to start training your Malamute puppy as early as possible. Begin with basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Be consistent with your training sessions and use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats and praise to reward your puppy for good behavior.

Socialize Your Puppy

Malamutes are social dogs, so it’s essential to socialize your puppy from a young age. Expose your puppy to different people, animals, and environments to help them become well-rounded and confident. This will also help prevent behavioral issues in the future.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is the most effective training method for Malamutes. Reward your puppy with treats, praise, and playtime when they exhibit the desired behavior. Avoid using punishment or harsh training methods, as this can lead to fear and aggression.

Be Patient and Persistent

Training a puppy takes time and patience. Be consistent with your training sessions and repeat commands until your puppy understands what is expected of them. Keep training sessions short and fun to maintain your puppy’s interest and attention.

Crate Training

Crate training can be beneficial for both you and your puppy. It provides a safe and comfortable space for your puppy and helps with potty training and preventing destructive behavior. Gradually introduce your puppy to the crate and make it a positive experience by using treats and toys.

Seek Professional Help if Needed

If you’re having difficulty training your Malamute puppy or if you’re a first-time dog owner, consider seeking professional help from a dog trainer or behaviorist. They can provide guidance and personalized training techniques to address specific issues or challenges.

Remember, training is an ongoing process, and consistency is key. With patience, positive reinforcement, and proper socialization, your Malamute puppy will grow into a well-behaved and happy adult dog.

How can I stop the biting in my Malamute puppy?

Assign them to a timeout. Put your puppy gently in their crate to give them a chance to settle down and stop biting. Maintaining your composure is crucial to preventing them from learning to associate the crate with punishment. You can let the dog outside when they are calm.

Puppies have about 28 teeny-tiny razors in their mouths, and they seem to be drawn to your fingers or toes. When your cute puppy seems to be all teeth, what dog trainers refer to as “play biting,” it’s annoying and frequently painful. You can train your puppy to stop doing this with just a few easy steps, but it is completely normal for puppies to teethe and necessary for development.

All dogs should practice reducing their bite pressure. There might come a time when they speak negatively about you or someone else because they are hurt or afraid. But if they have mastered bite inhibition, they are aware that they shouldn’t press their teeth firmly into something. Puppies naturally bite each other when they play. The other dog will probably yelp loudly to warn the puppy, “Hey, that hurt!” if they bite their mother or another puppy too hard.

Depending on the dog, you can also teach them not to bite you by yelling “ow!” loudly. Be careful though, as some puppies may become even more agitated and likely to bite as a result. The best course of action in this situation is to quietly turn around, leave, or carefully place the dog in their crate for a short period of time to calm down. If they do, make sure to give your dog a treat and some verbal praise as a reward.

How much time should you leave a Malamute alone?

They have the potential to cause damage, especially if left unattended because they are easily bored. If you must leave the house, don’t forget to leave your Malamute with safe toys and brain teasers to keep them occupied. The maximum amount of time you should ever leave your dog alone is four hours, but some Malamutes may not even be able to handle this. Therefore, work with your particular dog to determine how much separation they can tolerate without it negatively affecting their wellbeing.

Do not forget to socialize your Malamute as a puppy with numerous other dogs, diverse people, and various experiences.

Due to their origins as working dogs and their desire to be kept busy, malamutes are extremely active dogs. Their primary function was to pull sledges, and this urge to pull, run, and roam persists today. There are many clubs that allow Alaskan Malamutes and their owners to go sledding – even without snow – and this is ideal for fun-loving Alaskan Malamutes, not only for their physical but also for their mental wellbeing.

Why is it so difficult to train Malamutes?

Although I have only trained a few hundred, I have lived with two gorgeous Malamutes. Malamutes are not for everyone, despite the fact that I am utterly biased and think they can be the most delightful of canine companions. Due to their size and strength, malamutes typically approach training a little differently than other breeds. While most people refer to this quality as stubbornness, Malamutes appear to view it as creative thinking.

Regardless of terminology, shrewd potential owners are familiar with the malamute perspective before getting a puppy. In three to four months, Malamute puppies go from being a puppy to an adolescent, a dramatic transition. Please don’t make the same errors that I did. Use a different Malamute for practice instead of your first one. Before you adopt a cute, cuddly puppy, make sure you are prepared and have a plan in place. Learn how adult dogs of any breed are likely to behave, but pay particular attention to adult Malamute behavior.

Good Malamute owners must be devoted, prepared, and have brains that are as active as their lifestyles. Do extensive pre-training research on the characteristics of your breed. If you plan to train a dog that can easily pull several thousand pounds and may be stronger and larger than most family members, make sure you are completely familiar with lure and reward training techniques.

Do malamutes bond with a single person?

The temperament of the breed is cheerful. The Malamute is highly cooperative but never slavish or fawning, and is happiest when treated as a wise partner. The Alaskan Malamute does not work for you; rather, it coexists with you. The typical Malamute is outrageously and almost universally amiable to people, though occasionally aggressive toward other dogs, especially those of the same sex. Malamutes are the peaceful, nomadic people’s dogs, and they almost never guard property or greet visitors with a tail wag and a face lick. These dogs form strong, intricate bonds with their owners, but they are not one-person dogs. With their new owners, adult Malamute rescues quickly form bonds.

The adaptable Malamute is content to pull a sled but is equally content to travel alongside hikers or backpackers. The Malamute is the perfect running companion in chilly weather. Malamutes are large, powerful, and remarkably agile, and they occasionally enjoy bringing tennis balls and Frisbees back. Some Malamutes adore swimming, while others have a strong dislike of the water. The breed is not prone to motion sickness, and most people enjoy car rides. The majority of Malamutes find the company of people to be their greatest joy, though they are perfectly content to watch television with their owners. Malamutes are wonderful companions and are keenly aware of their surroundings.

The Alaskan Malamute is renowned as a competitive Obedience dog more for his crowd-pleasing antics than for his performance. However, Malamutes consistently earn titles from the Canadian Kennel Club for Companion Dog, Companion Dog Excellent, Utility Dog, and Tracking, and the breed is incredibly enjoyable to work with even if it isn’t always a pleasure to exhibit in the Obedience ring. The Malamute, on the other hand, is simple to train to behave as a pet.

Malamutes are an Arctic breed of dog that can live outdoors in a sturdy kennel with a high, strong fence but also make wonderful, nearly odorless house dogs. Keeping a Malamute on a chain, tie-out, or trolley is never recommended, and neither should letting them run free. The indoor dog needs daily leash- or enclosed-field exercise. Malamutes can be taken off lead with the right training from the start. The daily need for affection and company is just as great for outdoor dogs.

How can a puppy be reprimanded to stop biting?

While yelling at your puppy for biting is not recommended, it is acceptable to use a straightforward, firm signal such as “No!” when they misbehave. If your puppy snaps at you while you’re playing, get up, take your hands away, and yell “No!” When they sit still, give them a treat, and then resume your interaction and playtime with them.

You can take a variety of measures to reduce puppy biting, some of which you should avoid, like.

Being a dog owner requires that you train your puppy, so keep at it even when it gets frustrating or seems to be failing. How should a Malamute puppy be trained?

Puppy obedience training benefits greatly from the use of positive reinforcement. When your Alaskan Malamute displays the desired behavior, you should praise them, give them treats, or engage them in play. Your puppy will be more likely to repeat the behavior in the future if you use this method to help them connect good behavior with rewarding outcomes.

Given that puppies have a short attention span, it is crucial to make training sessions interesting and brief. Two or three times per day, aim for 10-15 minute sessions. This makes sure your Alaskan Malamute maintains focus and learns information more effectively. The secret to effective training sessions is quality over quantity, always.

Use straightforward, easy-to-understand commands when training your Alaskan Malamute to obey you. To avoid confusing your puppy, try not to use multiple words to express the same command. For best results, stick to one-word commands like “sit,” “stay,” “down,” and “come”.

  • I have been noticing in many of your articles that Teddy has very long legs proportionally in comparing to malamutes of his body size. That makes him an excellent hugger as he has long arms to reach out to Shane’s back shoulders. I guess he will be a giant with such long legs when he reaches his full size 😄

  • I laughed out loud at this one. Great clip. He’s just like a child wanting to play instead of doing homework or taking a test. It’s a good thing we love them so much for what they do for the inside of us, and not love them for graduating from Oxford. Mine can only do one single trick after two years, but I love the little guy like crazy.

  • I have a 6 month old malamute too, he learned: 1) Down 2) Sit 3) Follow (he stays between my legs) 4) Heel 5) Up (if he’s down he’ll sit, if sitting he’ll jump up) 6) Ready? He’ll get ready to run — Let’s go (he’ll start running full speed in the direction I’m going Come here 7) inside (he’ll run into his cage) 8) back (this one he’s still working on) BUT he won’t do anyyyyyy of them unless I show him I have food before putting it in my pocket or fist…. when I got no food he just cuddles and smiles with his tongue out lol any tips? Also he’s not as fluffy as your dog but he is purebred according to AKC.
