What was the miniature poodle used for originally?

It is typical for miniature poodles to weigh between 10-15 pounds and stand between 10-15 inches tall. The fact that miniature poodles were originally used as water retrieval dogs for duck hunters gives them a muscular, athletic build similar to that of their standard and toy-size cousins.

Mini poodles have lively faces, curly coats, and dark eyes like their breed-siblings. Most miniature poodle owners prefer the understated sporting clip, a short, one-length cut that looks a little less like a topiary, over the elaborate continental hairdo, which is popular with show poodles and features curling pom-poms carefully shaped and clipped around the joints and chest.

No problem if you only like dogs of a certain color. Black, white, apricot, grey, silver, and brown are just a few of the many colors that the miniature poodle can be. With a mini poodle around, you won’t need to buy lots of lint rollers because the breed tends to shed very little. And even though no dog is truly hypoallergenic, poodles of all sizes can make good pets for allergy sufferers.

The temperament of miniature poodles is also in the middle of the pack when compared to other dogs of the same breed. The standard poodle is the calmest of the three, while tiny toy poodles have a tendency to be a little more hyper. All breeds of poodles occasionally experience anxiety and timidity, and they thrive in a calm environment with lots of care and attention.

What two breeds combine to form a Poodle?

One of the oldest breeds created especially for waterfowl hunting is the poodle. The majority of historians concur that although the poodle was developed in France, its origins were in Germany.

Many people think that the breed was created through the mating of different European water dogs, including those from Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Hungary, and Russia. Other historians believe that the North African Barbet, which was brought to the Iberian Peninsula, is one of the ancestors of the Poodle. In Gaul, where it was used for its hunting prowess, the breed eventually arrived.

Poodles are also frequently thought to have originated as Asian herding dogs that traveled with the Germanic Goth and Ostrogoth tribes before becoming a type of German water dog. Another hypothesis holds that the Poodle is descended from dogs that were brought from the Asian steppes by the encroaching North African Berbers and later made their way to Portugal with the Moors in the eighth century.

Whatever its lineage, this breed is very old. Artifacts and tombs from the first centuries B.C. that depict Poodle-like dogs are found in Egypt and Rome. C. Drawings and statues depict dogs that resemble contemporary Poodles her
ding livestock, bringing in game nets, and retrieving game from marshes.

Which dog has the highest intelligence?

Learn how your dog compares to the 10 smartest breeds and whether smarter dogs make better pets.

Your beagle may seem like the most intelligent dog around, but they have the unfortunate distinction of being one of the hardest dog breeds to train. They are quick to pick up on the neighbor’s growling Doberman.

Like human intelligence, canine intelligence takes many different forms. There are fixed realities when it comes to your animal’s inherent qualities, even though the best in any breed can be nurtured by owners willing to put in the time and effort.

A dog that has been bred to hunt, herd, or retrieve is more likely to be agile, eager to work, mobile, and eager to please. Quicker learning will occur. It might appear disoriented and a little bit dense if it was bred to be a scent hound or a livestock guard dog.

Trainers assert that any dog can learn the fundamentals of sitting and staying, even though some breeds are more agile than others. They might just take a little longer to get it.

Knowing what your dog is built for and how to motivate them are the keys.

But bear in mind that often the smartest dogs don’t make the best pets. Finding a breed that fits your lifestyle and concentrating on bringing out the best in your dog are your tasks.

Stanley Coren, PhD, a neuropsychologist, focuses on trainability as a sign of intelligence in his best-selling book The Intelligence of Dogs.

A psychology professor at the University of British Columbia used scores from more than 200 professional dog obedience judges who evaluated 110 breeds based on working and obedience tests.

The top dogs learned commands in fewer than five tries and obeyed them 95% of the time or better. The list and a breed description provided by the American Kennel Club are as follows.

1. Known for its intelligence, exceptional instinct, and working prowess, the Border Collie is the world’s best sheep herder and a workaholic.

2. Poodle: Very intelligent and energetic. was developed to pull objects out of the water. It’s possible that the miniature variety was employed in truffle hunting.

3. The top police, guard, and military dog in the world as well as a devoted family pet and herder is the German Shepherd.

Did poodles participate in the war?

Since at least the 17th century, poodles have served as military working dogs. Most likely as a result of their high intelligence, trainability, and background as gundogs, which make them suitable for battlefields as shown by their training to ignore gunfire. Although poodles were never sent on military duty abroad, evidence suggests that they were frequently employed domestically to guard military installations, defense facilities, and even the coastline.

Poodles were utilized by Napoleon’s armies. After the Battle of Marengo, Napoleon recalled: “I walked over the battlefield and saw a poodle giving his dead friend’s face one last lick among the dead. I had never experienced anything like this on one of my battlefields”.

The Standard Poodle was one of 32 breeds that the US Army classified as war canines in 1942. “This breed has an unusual ability to learn and retain information, as well as keen senses,” it was noted about the breed. The coat’s rapid growth, inability to shed, and need for constant trimming to keep it from matting are drawbacks. Towards the end of 1943, the list was reduced to 18 breeds, but the Standard Poodle remained on it. The dog was finally removed from the list at the end of 1944.

These dogs were initially bred to be water retrievers, hence the Poodle’s name, which refers to splashing in water. It was their responsibility to return ducks and other birds to their owners. Although the Poodle is the national dog of France, it actually has German roots.

Why do people breed dogs and poodles?

Being such a wonderful dog breed, Poodles frequently add positive qualities to any mix.

A “designer dog” has this benefit. Even though the term has a bad reputation, the goal is to produce a dog breed that maximizes the best traits of each parent. Designer dogs typically have two purebred parents, in contrast to some mixed breeds. One puppy can be like having two dogs in one, depending on the characteristics of the offspring. For instance, Labradoodles were originally bred from Labradors, which are frequently used as guide dogs, and Poodles, which have a low-shed coat, to be hypoallergenic service dogs.

Poodles are consistently ranked first among “hypoallergenic,” non-shedding dog breeds. Poodles don’t have an undercoat and only have a single coat, unlike the majority of dog breeds. Poodles have a dense, curly coat that can range in texture from soft and wavy to coarse and woolly.

No dog’s fur is entirely non-allergenic, but a poodle’s coat is frequently referred to as hypoallergenic, which means unlikely to trigger an allergic reaction because of its extremely low allergenic properties. Poodles are a low-shedding breed, which explains this. You hardly ever see their hair on the ground, in their clothes, or on the furniture because it sheds in small amounts and tangles in the coats around it.

Why not purchase a Poodle hybrid?

Crossbred poodle disadvantages Some dogs will end up with a lot of hair on them. The crossbred puppies may have been created by a backyard or puppy mill breeder looking to make a quick buck; as a result, the litter was bred from overbred dogs with numerous personality flaws.

  • I’ve got a 14 1/2 year old apricot colored female mini poodle named Molly. Sweetest dog I’ve ever owned. Very smart, very curious, especially if someone leaves a bag on the floor, and extremely loyal. She constantly lays at my feet or within eye sight at all times. When she plays, she plays hard, but usually she sleeps a lot, due to her advanced age. I carry her up and down stairs, as she took a tumble at my new place (both the treads and rises of the steps were the same color gray, and I don’t think could differentiate what was what), so she’s afraid now. Vet says that generally, her sight is very good, and hearing is still awesome. I hate thinking about life without her, and although her health is great right now, from past experience, I know that things can change in a heartbeat. I just appreciate every day I have with her.

  • I’ve had 5 Poodles thru out my life time, and everything he’s saying is so true. I love poodles so much. They are the cutest, sweetest, funniest, most human like dogs. I adore them. My little guy I have now likes to smile every once in awhile, and he knows it just kills me when he does. I always make a big deal out of it, telling him how cute he is. He just laps up the joy and happiness he brings me.

  • I have two poodles one is trained to close kitchen drawers for me. He is a miniature. My other one is a teacup name is Bugzy she is two years old and weighs 3 pounds. She keeps Shadow on his best behavior. They get along great ! When my daughter gave me this sweet i2/2, pound puppy I was afraid he would hurt her. He knows she’s little they run and play. They are my companions, friends, confidants. They are my life and I am theirs. There is no other love than the love of a dog❤️

  • I have had 2 mini poodles. ONe was super smart and athletic and affectionate, The other was very funny and quirky and walked like a show dog. They both lived to 14. Now I have a toy poodle. He is ubelievably affectionate and sensitive and sweet. Sweetest dog I have ever seen. I am in love! I had 2 bichons and they were not nearly as funny or smart, but I loved them just the same. Poodles are funny and smart and affectionate. I always wanted a standard, but it’s too miuch work for me now in my 60s. Poodles are very elegant looking but real clowns underneath!

  • Our beloved Malteser Bobbie passed last December in the age of thirteenandhalf years. I never believed I could love another dog as much as I do Bobbie. Since 8 weeks we have a Toy Poodle, Max is 16 weeks old now and he is a very cute, clever dog with lots of energy. He loves to play and to be outside. I could write pages about him, but will keep it short: We love him so much! 🥰

  • I have a beautiful apricot colored poodle as you can see in my profile picture. His name is Graham and he is the sweetest thing, he just turned 1 in April and he is so smart, I typically groom him but sometimes we miss the groom every once in a while I like my dogs to be all shaggy but also short haired. To sum it up tho hes just the best boy ever. 🙂
