The German Shepherd breed is known for its striking appearance and impressive size. German Shepherds fall within the medium to large dog category, characterized by a strong and robust build that exudes both elegance and power. The average height of an adult German Shepherd is typically between 22 to 26 inches (56 to 66 cm) at the shoulders. Male German Shepherds often stand slightly taller than females. However, it’s important to note that these measurements may vary based on factors such as genetics, lineage, and geographical regions of breeding.
In terms of weight, adult male German Shepherds typically weigh between 65 to 90 pounds (29 to 41 kg), while adult females weigh between 50 to 70 pounds (23 to 32 kg). Again, it’s worth mentioning that these weight ranges are approximate and can vary depending on individual factors.
It’s important to provide proper care, nutrition, and exercise to ensure the overall health and well-being of German Shepherds, regardless of their size.

Since then, it has been applied to a wide range of occupations, such as disability assistance, search and rescue, law enforcement, and military operations. Shepherds selected and produced dogs in small towns throughout Germany. It was acknowledged that the breed possessed the abilities needed to herd sheep, including intelligence, speed, strength, and keen senses of smell. IntroductionRegardless of your reason for acquiring a puppy, you’ll have to win it over. You, not your dog, will have to be the leader of the pack if your pup is to develop into a well-mannered family member instead of a burden. Dominance and alpha behavior are important concepts that every dog owner should comprehend. German Shepherds will assume the alpha role if they feel you are not up to the task, if you are unable to react and reassure them or if you have not established dominance. If the leader of the pack in your household is not you, look out. Dogs are animals, not human beings. They are pack animals by nature. Every pack has a leader, known as the alpha animal, who dominates and leads the other members of the pack. Decisions for the entire pack are made by the alpha, who is the boss. Usually the pack will have an alpha male and an alpha female. All the other members of the pack form a hierarchy of dominance and submission where everyone has a place. The alpha position is not guarantied for life, it lasts only as long as the pack permits it to last. You could be the alpha in the pack but if the respect is lost and regain by a canine member of the pack your leadership and control are also lost, leaving you chaos in your own home. Your family, as well as any other dogs and cats you may have, form your dog’s pack inside your home. You are accountable for establishing your dominance and for subtly and overtly reiterating it as needed. The control will be in your dog’s hands if you don’t do this because it will become a natural behavior. A dog can be the best friend and biggest blessing in the world, or it can be the worst nightmare and a danger to everyone in the house, regardless of breed. Don’t be fooled little foofoo dogs can be as aggressive as any breed. Many people assume that they are automatically in charge just because humans are superior to animals. Being the pack leader does not require you to be large and aggressive, but do you really feel like it? Does your dog sense it? Additionally, it does not imply that there must be a contest of wills in which you emerge as the winner. Anyone can be the pack leader. It has an air of authority and an attitude. It serves as the cornerstone for mutual respect and gives the two of you the building blocks for communication. A pack animal is subordinated before becoming a full-fledged member of the group. With dogs, subordination begins shortly after the third week of life and continues throughout early development. Most normal, healthy puppies are basically pushy animals, and will try to advance as far as possible within the social order of the pack. The key to successfully rearing a puppy is to establish yourself as the pack leader and then maintain that position for the life of your dog. When adopting or rescuing a dog, especially a GSD, it is important to know some history of the animal. Most of the time that history is unavailable and must be developed by doing certain tests that will indicate dominance or aggression. Allow a professional to evaluate the dog and seek a quality trainer immediately after adopting just to be sure. At SW Florida GSD Rescue, we thoroughly vet every animal we accept in order to do everything we can to guarantee the adopter of a good adoption experience and a good family pet. Because no one can ever be completely certain, make it your mission to establish dominance and leadership as soon as you and your best friend get home. The techniques discussed below are very beneficial and have been clearly defined by their author. In the wild, the adults of the pack start early to teach the cubs the rules, so how does one become the alpha leader? The adults gently but firmly pin the puppies to the ground by grabbing them by the head or neck. With their ears back, tails down, and wagging, the cubs approach the adults in a respectful manner while also licking their muzzles as they do so. Not out of fear, but out of respect and affection, the cubs display this behavior. Its purpose is to maintain harmony and peace within the pack, and it is known as the subordination display. Alpha exercisesLeadership exercises can attest to humans’ status as the alpha species in the family pack. Your dog will come to you once you’ve built this bond. He will value and adore you and want to spend time with you. Most rescued dogs become Velcro for the first 3-4 weeks as they are eager to establish themselves in the pack and to feel out where they fit. After he learns to submit to handling, all other tasks such as grooming, nail clipping, cleaning ears, and medicating will be easier to accomplish. But first, you need to teach him that you can control him and doing so won’t hurt him. You need to earn his complete trust. Keep your dog’s trust at all times. Never summon your dog to you so that you can hit him, punish him, or demand any bad behavior. There is never a need to hit your dog; instead, most breeds respond well to firm words and corrections. These training drills will help develop leadership, but they shouldn’t be used with an older pup who has mastered the use of his teeth as a weapon. Only puppies under three months old should perform exercises one and two. If there is no aggression issue, exercises three and four are appropriate for puppies up to six months of age. As you would with a newborn human, be firm but gentle when performing all exercises. 1. Sit on the ground, then pick your dog up off the ground with both hands holding him facing you just behind his front legs. Hold him at arms’ length and away from you. Direct your attention to his eyes. If he struggles, growl at him with a low guttural tone. Till he unwinds, hold him. Between 15 and 45 seconds can be used to hold him in this position. Vary the location. 2. Sit on the floor and cradle your pup, placing one hand under his head and the other supporting his back so that he is upside down on his back, and up in the air. Hold a larger puppy across your lap. Hold the pup for 15 to 45 seconds, using the same growl as in exercise 1 if he struggles. Hold him until he relaxes. 3. If your puppy is large, substitute this exercise for the first two. Straddle your pup, with one of your legs on each side of him. You should be facing the same direction as your dog. Lock your fingers together under his chest, just behind the front legs. Lift his front legs off the ground for 15 to 45 seconds. If he struggles, growl at him till he is quiet. 4. Your dog should be on the ground with its four legs extended and facing away from you. Hold him firmly by the neck with one hand, and press down on his midsection with the other hand. Talk to him softly after he is quiet. It might take two or three minutes to get him to relax. If he exposes his belly to be rubbed, you are on the right track. Do not allow him to struggle, get up, or nip. When he unwinds, always shower him with compliments in a low voice. Additionally, now is a good time to gently handle all four of his paws and take a quick peek inside his mouth to help him get used to being handled by you. Be sure to do this exercise four or five times a day at first. Taper off as the pup gets more used to you and accepts your leadership. ________________________________________The stareEye contact is also one of the ways order is kept in a wolf pack. Only an alpha animal may use the stare to remind everyone who is in charge. When you initiate eye contact, you express your alpha position. Encourage your pup to maintain eye contact for several seconds, making it a pleasant experience. Do not force him to do so. Use the term “watch me” and always praise him the instant you have eye contact. You shouldn’t attempt this with a dog that believes he is already in charge, though. The dog must first recognize you as the alpha. Otherwise, a stare-down will start. An alpha dog won’t be eager to turn his head first. It will support the dog’s alpha status if you are the first to turn away or even blink your eyes. ________________________________________Alpha discipline: Pack leader activitiesThere are many pack leader activities you can use as part of a daily training routine. Probably the single most important command your dog can learn is “sit. ” You can incorporate “sit” into everyday situations as a reminder that you are in charge of things. Tell your dog to “sit” before you feed him, before you play, before he goes out the door. This shows the dog that he must respond to you before indulging in his own pleasures. If he is obedience trained, put him in a down-stay while you prepare his dinner. Your dog will accept you as pack leader as long as you are consistent and fair in your demands. You must never permit him to growl or snap. If he does, a severe scruff shake is necessary, followed by no attention from you for 10 to 15 minutes. The scruff is the loose skin around the dog’s neck. If your pet growls or snaps and you are not afraid to handle him, grab him firmly by the scruff with both hands, stare him in the eyes, and shake him. Then put him in his crate for 15-20 minutes and ignore him. If your dog growls or snaps and you are afraid to discipline him, seek professional help. Don’t ignore t.
