Is The Tail Docked On A Bull Mastiff

Expert’s answer:

The tail of a Bullmastiff can be docked, but it is not a standard practice. Some Bullmastiffs may have their tails docked for various reasons, including historical traditions or specific breed standards. However, tail docking is a controversial practice and is increasingly being discouraged by veterinary associations and animal welfare organizations. The decision to dock a Bullmastiff’s tail is typically made by the owner or breeder. It is important to note that tail docking should only be performed by a licensed veterinarian and in compliance with local laws and regulations.

In 1933, the American Kennel Club approved the breed for the first time. The Bullmastiff is a large dog, weighing between 100 and 130 pounds, with shoulders that range from 24 to 27 inches in height, depending on the gender. They have a short, dense fur coat that comes in fawn, red, or brindle color variations.

Bullmastiffs are docile and loving around family members, but when their family is in danger, they transform into fearless guardians. Although all interactions between kids and pets (regardless of breed) should be supervised, they get along well with young children and other dogs.

Due to their high intelligence, bullmastiffs typically pick things up quickly when trained. Bullmastiffs have a lot of energy and develop into very strong, large dogs that can easily knock people and children over if they aren’t trained, so it’s crucial for pet parents to train and socialize this breed early. Why is the tail of mastiffs docked?

In the past, it was believed that docking the tail would help an animal avoid contracting rabies, strengthen its back, move more quickly, and avoid injuries from rattling, fighting, and baiting..

Nowadays, tail docking may be performed for prophylactic, therapeutic, cosmetic, or injury prevention reasons. The tails of working dogs, such as some hunting dogs, herding dogs, or terrier dogs, can accumulate burrs and foxtails, causing pain and infection. Additionally, because the tail wags while moving through dense brush or thickets, the dog may sustain an injury due to abrasion or other damage. Terriers can become stuck underground and need to be pulled out by the tail, in which case the dog’s docked tail prevents the dog from being rescued. Bones in the tail can also be broken by impact in the field, resulting in spinal injury to the tail. By removing it, it also safeguards the tail against damage. These justifications are disputed by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the largest veterinary professional association in the country, which claims that “These justifications for docking working dogs’ tails lack substantial scientific support. In the largest study on dog tail injuries to date, the incidence was 0.23 percent, and it was determined that 500 dogs would need to have their tails docked to prevent one tail injury”.

Both breeders and veterinarians routinely dock puppies under 10 to 14 days old without anesthesia..

Larger dogs frequently used for guard or protection work (not to be confused with patrol work where a handler can provide secondary aid) may have their tails docked to prevent them from being grabbed in a fight. While some working dogs have their tails docked to prevent injury or infection. This is most typical in breeds like the Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Bandog, Cane Corso, and Boerboel, among others.

Bullmastiffs or Mastiffs: Which is larger?

The English Mastiff is larger than the Bullmastiff, but both dog breeds are enormous. Male bullmastiffs grow to be between 25 and 27 inches tall, while females grow to be between 24 and 26 inches tall. Male English Mastiffs reach a height of 30 inches at full maturity, compared to the females’ 27-inch height.

Bullmastiffs are typically between 110 and 130 pounds for males and 100 to 120 pounds for females. The weight of an adult male English Mastiff ranges from 160 to 230 pounds, while that of an adult female is between 120 and 170 pounds.

Bullmastiff coats are short, dense, and rough, offering excellent defense against rain, snow, and cold. The coat of an English Mastiff has two layers: a short, dense undercoat and a long, straight outer coat.

What distinguishes a Bullmastiff from a typical Mastiff?

Compared to Bullmastiffs, mastiffs are typically slower and less agile, as well as more relaxed. According to Speer, the Masti
ff performs best at more laid-back sports, where the Bullmastiff excels at sports like agility. “I always say that the AKC gave the Mastiffs the Rally as a gift. Because our dogs enjoy talking to us or interacting with us in some other way, they perform better at rallies where we can encourage them along the way”.

In the company of their owners, mastiffs are happiest. They are happy to work alongside you if you give them a task, but they are also content to lounge at your feet or on the couch. They are your best friend ever, according to Speer. Nothing on a chilly winter night is cozier than a Mastiff lying on your feet. Nothing is sweeter than receiving a small, gentle kiss on the cheek from that enormous head. A Mastiff sleeping inside your home gives you a sense of security unlike any other”.

Collings contends that in order to develop into well-rounded family members, mastiffs and bullmastiffs must receive early socialization and obedience training. You must buy from a trustworthy breeder who prioritizes both health and temperament in addition to health”.

Is docking a dog’s tail considered cruel?

Because puppies’ nervous systems are still developing, tail docking proponents assert that it doesn’t hurt or cause discomfort. This is untrue—a dog’s fundamental nervous system is fully formed at birth. Evidence suggests that young dogs are just as sensitive to pain as adult dogs. It takes cutting through muscles, tendons, up to seven pairs of extremely sensitive nerves, and connections to the bone and cartilage to dock a puppy’s tail. Typically, there is no anesthesia or analgesia (pain relief) used during tail docking. When the tail is cut off and while the wound is being stitched, puppies repeatedly make intense shrieking vocalizations, showing that they are in great pain. Continuous pain also results from tissue damage and inflammation as the wound heals. Additionally, this unnecessary surgery carries a risk of infection or other issues.

Additionally, having one’s tail docked can result in a dog’s unneeded, avoidable, and long-term suffering. For instance, when a chronic neuroma develops at the site of the amputation. Neuromas can be extremely painful.

In canine social behavior, the dog’s tail plays a vitally important role. Dogs communicate primarily with their tails. Among many other messages, the position and movement of the tail can convey friendliness, a desire to play, submission, or a warning signal. Dogs use a variety of communication, boundary-setting, and defensive mechanisms, including the tail, to communicate with one another, establish boundaries, and prevent aggressive encounters.

When humans and dogs interact, the tail also conveys crucial messages. The movement of a dog’s tail can aid humans in deciphering body language and determining the right type of interaction for a particular dog. The tail thus has a significant impact on public health and safety.

Is dog tail docking harmful?

When a dog’s tail is docked, they may contract an infection or even a neuroma, which is a type of nerve tumor. Either of these will hurt and might even make the dog overly protective of his tail. Dogs communicate using their tails to express joy, fear, rage, and excitement to humans and other dogs.

Despite having a more conventional appearance, most dogs, regardless of breed, are kept as companions rather than working animals. The American Kennel Club and breeders’ traditional standards are largely responsible for maintaining the practices of tail docking and ear cropping. However, nowadays, breeders and kennel clubs (like United Kennel Club) are beginning to accept natural ears and tails.

These procedures also have an impact on a dog’s outward appearance, which has social repercussions. According to studies, people perceive aggressive dogs as having their ears cropped and their tails docked. A dog with these modifications is less likely to be approached in daily life, which may have a negative impact on their social skills.

The SPCA of Northern Nevada does not support the practice of animal body modification, despite the need for more research on these issues.

Does having their tails docked harm puppies?

A: Docking your tail causes pain. 25 It is challenging to determine the degree or length of the pain under ideal or typical conditions. Painful procedures carried out during the neonatal period, when the nervous system is susceptible, can cause negative long-term changes that affect how pain is processed and perceived later in life. 26,27.

Why is cosmetic tail docking not allowed under AVMA policy?

The most important query is not “How dangerous is the procedure?” but rather “Is there sufficient justification for performing it?”. e., for show) implies that the procedure is not necessary medically. There is no obvious benefit to our patients in performing this procedure because there is no evidence that shows dogs who have their tails docked experience self-esteem or pride in appearance, which are common justifications for having cosmetic procedures done on people. The only benefit that appears to be derived from cosmetic tail docking of dogs is the owner’s impression of a pleasing appearance. The AVMA believes that this is insufficient justification to carry out a surgical procedure.

What two breeds combine to form a Boerboel?

The Boerboel is a descendant of the Boer Dog, or Boer Hunting Dog, an ancient colonial crossbreed of mastiffs and bulldogs used as guard dogs on isolated farms and estates as well as for big game hunting.

The Boerboel is a large dog of the mastiff type that is native to South Africa and is typically kept as a family guard dog. It has a short coat, a big body, strong bones, and well-defined muscles.

The Federation Cynologique Internationale does not recognize it, but the Kennel Union of Southern Africa does..

The Boerboel is considered a landrace in South Africa because the Animal Improvement Act (62 of 1998) defines a landrace as an animal breed that is indigenous to or developed in the republic. According to the Act, “animal breeders societies” with a registered status are given authority. The South African Boerboel Breeders’ Society (SABBS) is one such organization. The only organization permitted by the Act to formally register Boerboels is the SABBS. In its capacity as the Boerboel dog breed’s officially recognized custodian, SABBS is in charge of establishing the criteria for the breed’s identification, documentation, evaluation, and advancement. The Boerboels listed on the books of the South African Kennel Union are still recognized..

  • I would never crop the ears or dock the tail on any dog. My current boy Brexit survived happy tail with only a small part of the tip of his tail damaged when he was in a crate. Brexit is the only dog that I or a family member has had that has ever damaged his tail in 55 years! I just don’t like the look and like to keep them as natural as possible.

  • The play bow 🙂 the tail 🙂 they do helicopter tail too! Their tails are very muscular, there’s like 5 ot so inches at the base where it’s thick like a wrist and then decreases a bit, but ya when that thing gets going, watch out. Their faces are so expressive, with the eyebrows and everything. But watch the tail 🙂 they can not move a muscle otherwise but just the last like 8 inches will be wiggling, and it says sooo much about how they are feeling 🙂
