Where exactly is the Kentucky Dachshund Rescue located?

KDR places single families for adoption within a three-hour drive of its Georgetown, Kentucky, office. Home visits are possible all over Kentucky, as well as in some areas of Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio. If there is ever an emergency and we have to recover the animal on our own, we maintain this distance requirement.

Please be aware that adopting a pet from a reputable rescue organization can take up to a week. Please let your references know we will call them and ask them to please answer or call us back as soon as possible to help us complete our reference check quickly. Many times, unanswered reference calls can cause an application to be delayed.

For tracking and medical reasons, dog names must remain the same. A name change can make it challenging for an ER to access vital information about your dog’s medical history in the event that they go missing or experience a medical emergency (while in your care, at a kennel, with a pet sitter, or elsewhere). If a shelter has multiple records with conflicting information, it may be difficult for them to locate or contact the right owner. Maintaining the dog’s name helps to maintain their care history and requirements for their safety and wellbeing.

What happens to the puppies in puppy mills who don’t sell?

They are put up for sale, just like other unsold stock. Puppies are a fraction of what retailers pay for them. A puppy that is eight weeks old might initially cost $1,500 in a store. If no one purchases the puppy, the store will mark it down and keep doing so as the animal gets bigger and older. Puppies are eventually marked down to the price the store paid the puppy mill broker, which is typically a few hundred dollars. Stores frequently cut their losses and give puppies away to staff, friends, or animal rescue organizations if the puppy still doesn’t sell.

We advise compassionate people like you to take a “do not enter” stance because of this. Avoid visiting pet shops that sell puppies, shopping there, or even just going in to take a look. Leave the pet store and go to your neighborhood shelter to adopt if you want to help puppies and dogs.

What if I inadvertently acquired
a dog from a puppy mill?

The Vet Should Be Your First Stop If you rescue or unintentionally buy a puppy mill dog, the vet should be your first port of call. Make sure to explain the situation to your vet and ask for a complete examination. This can assist in locating any significant health issues before you bring your new addition home.

Surprisingly widespread across the nation are puppy mills. A startling 10,000 puppy mills are in operation in the US, selling puppies to unwary pet owners only to make money.

The majority of puppy mills are actually legal, and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates about 3,000 of them, which may surprise many pet parents. Let’s examine how puppy mills abuse dogs if they are legal, how they are abusive to dogs if they are illegal, and why puppy mills are still legal.

Certainly, puppy mills are inhumane. Puppy mills view animals as a means to an end rather than sentient, emotionally intelligent beings, no matter how many or what kind of dogs are bred. Dogs in puppy mills don’t get the care they need because they are treated more like products than pets, which negatively affects their mental and physical health.
