How To Keep A Husky Occupied While Working

Expert’s answer:

To keep a husky occupied while working, there are several activities and toys you can consider:

1. Exercise and Walks: Huskies are high-energy dogs that require plenty of exercise. Before starting your workday, take your husky for a long walk or engage in activities like running or hiking. This will help tire them out and keep them mentally stimulated.

2. Interactive Toys and Puzzle Toys: Provide your husky with interactive toys and puzzle toys that require them to problem-solve or work for treats. Toys like the Kong or puzzle toys can keep them entertained and mentally engaged while you’re working.

3. Snuffle Mats: A snuffle mat is a great way to engage a husky’s natural instinct to sniff and search for hidden treats. You can make your own snuffle mat by tying strips of fleece to a rubber mat, creating hiding spots for treats.

4. Food Dispensing Toys: Consider using food dispensing toys like the Kong or BusyBuddy Kibble Nibble. These toys require your husky to work for their food, providing mental stimulation and keeping them occupied.

5. Hide and Seek Games: Hide treats or toys around the house for your husky to find. This engages their sense of smell and provides mental stimulation. You can practice this activity while you’re at home to help them become familiar with searching for treats.

6. Training and Nose Work: Spend some time each day training your husky and engaging them in nose work activities. This can include teaching them new tricks, practicing obedience commands, or participating in scent training games.

7. Doggy Daycare or Dog Walker: If your work schedule allows, consider enrolling your husky in doggy daycare a few times a week or hiring a dog walker to come and take them for a walk or playtime. This can provide socialization and additional exercise for your husky.

Remember, huskies are intelligent and active dogs that require mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior. By incorporating these activities and toys into your husky’s routine, you can help keep them occupied and entertained while you’re working.

Can I leave my dog unattended for eight hours?

Unfortunately, a dog with separation anxiety may channel their agitated energy into destructive behavior, destroying furniture or breaking priceless items. If your dog does experience this issue, try leaving them alone for brief periods of time at first and then gradually extending your absence. A dog should be able to survive on its own for 8 hours once it can handle being left alone for 4 hours.

Some of the breeds that do well when left alone for extended periods of time include the Basset Hound, French Bulldog, Chihuahua, and Pugs.

Even though some dogs don’t necessarily enjoy it, they can tolerate brief periods of time spent alone during the day. Due to their nature as pack members, dogs require their owners’ company in order to feel content and safe. When you are not at home, you can help your dog by doing the following.

Always make sure your dog has had plenty of exercise before you leave the house, as a tired dog tends to behave well. Dogs’ daily exercise requirements vary greatly, so be sure to ask your vet or breeder for advice on giving your dog the right amount of exercise to keep them in shape, healthy, happy, and out of mischief.

The smallest and swiftest of the Arctic sled dog breeds is the Siberian Husky. Siberians are partially descended from the dogs that the Chukchi people of Siberia developed over a 3000 year period. However, a devastating series of famines in the 1860s meant that only a small number of the original Chukchi dogs survived, and these had to be crossed with other Arctic sled breeds to reestablish the Chukchi sled-dog stock. The Chukchi were a nomadic people who hunted, so they needed a dog that could withstand both the harsh Arctic winters and the hot Siberian summers, work well in a large team, pull light loads over long distances at a moderate speed, and live contentedly in tents and igloos with the Chukchi and their kids. The outcome was the dog that served as the prototype for the Siberian Husky as we know it today. In the early years of the 20th century, numbers of the breed were imported into the US, Canada, and Alaska to work in the goldfields and compete in the emerging sport of sled dog racing. This was when the breed began its new career as a working, racing, showing, and pet dog. Siberians first gained widespread attention in 1925 when they competed in the infamous “Serum Run,” a timed race to the isolated coastal town of Nome in Alaska, alongside other sled dogs. In the depths of the Alaskan winter, dog sled transportation was the only method of getting vaccine to Nome where a diphtheria epidemic had broken out. Despite the fact that numerous mushers and their dog teams took part in this valiant endeavor, history records that Leonhard Seppala and his team of Siberian Huskies were instrumental in making it a success. In the harshest weather that the Alaskan winter could muster, Seppala and his team ran 340 miles, more than six times the distance of any other team. More than anything else, this display of strength, endurance, and fortitude encapsulates the abilities of the Siberian Husky. Behind the charming demeanor and stunning exterior are steely muscles, a dogged spirit, and a constant urge to run. Visit the Siberian Info menu to learn more about the breed’s early history.

The first Siberians arrived in the UK in the 1940s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that more dogs were imported and their status as a breed in the UK was guaranteed. Samoyeds, Canadian Eskimo Dogs, Greenland Dogs, and Alaskan Malamutes are some other breeds of sled dogs that are still used today in the UK. There are also a few hybrid Alaskan Huskies that have been bred for racing; these are not purebred Alaskan Huskies.

  • I left on a calming article specifically for dogs, treats and toys, walked her, fed her, and came back to a baseboard chewed off in my apartment. The goal is to get her into doggy daycare the 4 days of the week I work. It’s about $40 a day, but will probably save money in apartment damages. I did everything right and still she found her way into trouble. Puppy mom problems. I didn’t scold her. I know it’s hard being home alone… But DEFINITELY doggy daycare when she’s a little older.

  • You such a sweetie good info… let me tell you that simon my dog is the best but i knew that i couldnt full fill his happiness so we went out and find him a partner they play all day long. no dog deserves to live solo, always have company for your dogs if not better not have a pet if you cant take of those needs. no hate and thats my opinion, love love love

  • Why bother have a dog, if they are expected to have the TV in the background, a dog walker to do the owners job and leave toys around to keep them occupied. What is this? A remedy for the lazy & obese? I thought the whole point of fat people owning dogs would’ve also help both the dog and the owner become more fit together. I’ve just provided a more productive remedy for both dog & obese owner. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME TO TAKE A DOG OUT FOR HIS WALKS, PLAY WITH THE DOG & TRAIN HIM? Then one should reconsider if they’re even fit to be a dog owner for their own selfish reasons. It’s just damn right cruel otherwise. Dogs are not supposed to be sat in front of a TV, neither are humans unless they want to be obese. they’re active animals and should be with active owners not lazy ones.

  • OMG I started laughing immediately! Like, seriously out loud. Ok…let me get back to listening to you and cracking up the entire time….ok, I really enjoyed that James. I am having some issues keeping my girl occupied now that the weather has turned. It’s really going to be a challenge. She does not like the cold, so we’ve gone from spending hours at the park, or walking in the ‘hood, to spending more time in my one bedroom apartment. I have been trying to keep her physically and mentally stimulated, so between walking/running the halls and learning new tricks/commands, I’ll incorporate a few of your suggestions as well. Thanks for the info and the belly laugh! 🙂
